5bites Posted November 15, 2014 Posted November 15, 2014 Just curious, a question especially for the guys that don't see eye to eye with me on this. What are your thoughts on bear hunting? Is it acceptable to you? The baiting etc? Obviously if there's a threat you brought it on yourself so that doesn't apply. It's not for the meat (I assume) and the fur isn't popular enough for harvest I wouldn't think. I don't care one way or the other. I have zero desire to see a bear while I hunt or go on a bear trip. Now if they're killing it just to kill a bear I disagree with it. If they can use the hide etc that's different. If they're a nuisance or require population control like coyotes I get it too. I'm just curious.

fishinwrench Posted November 15, 2014 Posted November 15, 2014 I dunno, but I could drop the hammer on a monkey as quick as I'd burn a tick. I'd make sure it was a clean head shot though, I don't wanna see it flopping around all spastic....just Boom! Instant dead monkey. No reporting to authorities, no hero shot selfies, wouldn't even brag about it to my friends.....Just personal gratification and a kind deed for the buzzards

fishinwrench Posted November 15, 2014 Posted November 15, 2014 He was a threat alright. Sumbitch was on a cougar !

And I don't like all these 4,5, and 600 yard shots that are in vogue now. That's not hunting to me. DING..DING...DING! My point exactly , you are one of the guys that should stay at home on the couch where the most dangerous animal you have to worry about is your pussy cat. A true outdoorsman enjoys watching nature as well as the sport of the hunt , if big animals scare you...stick to the Outdoor Channel please. By the way , not a Dem or Republican and definitely not a member of PETA. I hunt , I fish and I've spent enough time in the outdoors to feel comfortable without having to shoot everything that's bigger than me cause I'm scared for my life. Again , if you're not comfortable being around WILD animals then stick to petting zoos and the Animal Planet channel!!!
Chief Grey Bear Posted November 15, 2014 Posted November 15, 2014 I highly doubt that anybody on here is anti-hunting, and I sure ain't. I just don't see any point whatsoever in shooting something just because. I would far rather have a few mountain lions roaming around than about 3/4ths of the idiots in the woods during deer season. And by the way, if "tree hugger" means having a love and reverence for nature, then I'm definitely a tree hugger. I've even been known to hug trees. I also hunt and eat a lot of wild game. Believing that the Ozarks is a bit wilder and more interesting with a few big cats inhabiting the region doesn't make one an animal rights/anti-hunting idiot. Right on! I always chuckle when they blindly toss out the animal lover, anti gun, anti hunting, tree hugger, PETA, blah blah blah, liberal lable. But that is what they do best. Point fingers and call names. Facts be dammed! Feathers and Fins Posted November 15, 2014 Posted November 15, 2014 5bites; I do not hunt apex predators never have or will that includes Bear, I had a friend who shot a bear and we tried the meat several ways and the taste was horrid, I pride myself on making almost anything taste good and he is Cajun and lets face it they can make dung from an outhouse taste palatable in Gumbo and nothing we did could make it taste good. Shooting an animal for the hide or to brag I just cannot do it. Now all that said if it was a managed hunt for an older animal out of its prime and in no way contributing to the ongoing proliferation of the species I can understand that, still not for me but I understand it and can accept that as conservation. I did some research on this years back and at least in African big game the money and meat is utilized by the local villages ( meat certainly money well that is debatable if it does ). In North America Population control is needed for some of the animals I would like to see those hunts more ran like the AFRICAN Hunts where a PH is present and the targeted age group or problemed animals are the ones taken out. Brit; The long range I am on a fence with I hunt antelope and that range is very common so for them It is fine, but guys taking those shots on Deer, Elk and others does bother me for the reason it took years for me to hone my skills to make long range shots with a high degree of confidence under the right circumstances. I still pass up 8 to 9 out of 10 shots for a variety of reasons in those ranges but see all to many people take it. I watch a kid 3 years ago take an estimated 800 yard shot on an Mule Deer and missed by at least 20ft wide and 10ft low. Wind was blowing 15 to 20 with gust to 35 IMO that shot should never have been attempted. But here it is with TV and Youtube people trying to imitate their hero's of media! When we got back to the lodge that night the kid was sighting in his gun and I looked at it 270win. I didn't say anything but in retrospect I wish I had because that round should never be used for long range shooting imo. My 338 with that kind of wind would not be sent downrange but this seems to be as you said the Vogue thing and they try it, guess killing cactus and rocks is fun to. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Beaver-Lake-Arkansas-Fishing-Report/745541178798856
