5bites Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 Trolling motor Transducer alone will be over $150 shipped unless you can find one cheaper. I couldnt find one cheaper when i was looking. http://universalmania.com/humminbird-xtm-9-si-180-t-trolling-motor-transducer/ My dad has a Garmin 550c on the bow of his boat, i think it is a little over $200 on that some site. I really like it just as much or better than my Hummindird. I can see little crappie jigs on it no problem and it is simple to use The thing I like about garmin is they flat throw the wattage to their units. Even the inexpensive ones.
dtrs5kprs Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 if you happened to watch the deep water video that i posted, you would notice that i use two very inexpensive lowrance units. the one on the console is a lm480 which they do not make anymore. the one up front is a mark 5 pro. either on is under 200. bo Yep. Still have an X15 up front, and an X17 at the console. Wish I had bought several and put them away when they d/c'd them. There is a simplicity to the old grayscale units that just keeps you fishing instead of fiddling.
Seth Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 I did watch your video and noticed that.I am in the process of reinstalling my 480 up front right next to the 798, Can not see my jig on the 798 bird but can on the 480 or 320. Trolling motor is going to be a bit crowded with transducers.... Enjoyed the video Thanks Bo! How deep of water are you fishing and do you run 200/83khz for 2D? 83khz will give you a bigger cone and makes it easier to find your bait. It isn't as sharply detailed as the 200khz beam though. I've just got a Humminbird 728 black and white unit on the bow of my boat and I have no trouble watching my crappie jigs head towards brush directly underneath my trolling motor. What I usually do is run my graph in split screen mode with 200khz on one side and 83khz on the other. When I see something on the 83khz side, but not the 200khz side then I know I'm close to where I want to be, but not exact until it shows on both screens.
grizwilson Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 If you can't see a jig on your 798 there's a problem somewhere. That unit is waaaay more than capable. Guess I need some lessons, have it set to base settings Doug Vandenberg reccomends on BBC. I can see my 1/16 crappie jig on the 480 but on 798 might see it fall but usually lose it. Nice picture, but not impressed with sensitivity. May have it set wrong? Or just not smart enough to use it right. “If a cluttered desk is a sign, of a cluttered mind, of what then, is an empty desk a sign?”- Albert Einstein

Thanks, will check my settings, that is the thing I liked about 480 set on auto and done. “If a cluttered desk is a sign, of a cluttered mind, of what then, is an empty desk a sign?”- Albert Einstein
Seth Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 Are you using the down image or 2D screen on your 798? If you are running dual transducers at the same time up front, I'm surprised you don't have really bad interference.
Seth Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 Thanks, will check my settings, that is the thing I liked about 480 set on auto and done. Depending on your software version, there was an issue where the 83khz got very pixelated and didn't look very good on the side imaging units. I'm not sure what version that is or anything though, just read a lot of people griping about it.

Have not got the 480 hooked up yet, may need to test before installing? Have not ran them together. I just need to fish more and experiment. Think I am running the last update... need to check that also.
