I understand the simplicity part. I used to run a garmin 240 back in the day. Worked great until the transducer craps out.

Is it in max or clear mode?

Have tried both

I get all the theoretical advantages of color and scanning units, but find them distracting. Too easy to lose focus on what you should be watching on the graph.

My old X units will draw the weight, bait, and swivel on a drop shot. Figure that is good enough without resorting to scuba gear.

Think I am usually using down image. Have not got the 480 hooked up yet, may need to test before installing? Have not ran them together. I just need to fish more and experiment. Think I am running the last update... need to check that also. Usually fish 10-30 fow.

You want to use 2d in max mode. Max mode will clutter up the screen more, but it also shows a lot more detail than clear mode and that is what you want. After you use it a bit, you will figure out what is noise and what is important feedback. The clear and max mode setting only pertains to 2d, not down imaging if I remember correctly. Down imaging is meant for when you are moving and want to get a better detailed view of something. The beam for down imaging is wide and very narrow, like a slice. The 2D is cone shaped and used for vertical fishing. You may not even not need the 83khz beam if you stick with 2d in max mode.

Seth I really appreciate your knowledge and patience with my lack of. I am going to try your suggestions, may have more questions. Thanks a bunch.

Hope it helps. I'm no master when it comes to sonar, but I do a lot of Google and YouTube research and then try to apply it n the water the next time I get the chance. It definitely helped me put more crappie in the boat last spring!

I ended up buying a used lowrance elite 4x hdi today. It's never been mounted and I gave 50 dollars for it on craigslist. Anyone have any opinions on this unit.
