I've always heard the opposite T. I use brighter colors on cloudy days and more natural on sunny days. It does depend on your preference though and I have switched this around vice versa as well. Mostly stick with the first thing mentioned though.

Alex, agreed, in clear water & on clear sky days I like to use more natural or more transparent/translucent/ghost jerkbaits, unless the fish are super agressive. But heck, fish what you have confidence in. We all have our favourites.

My favorite jerkbait color is clown, my second favorite is a little brown jig. Hope this helps.

Agree with most above. Use what you have confidence in or switch to you find what they want.

I have read studies that say fish can see ultra violet and infrared. So only god amd the fish knows what they actually see as far as color of a lure. What is important is how you feel about it. Confidence will go from your head to the end of tour fishing line. I do not think you meed a bunch of colors. I think when you do you question yourself about having the wrong color on your line. That is aconfidence killer. In srick bait I think on LOZ anyway. size is something often ocerlooked. I have known several instances where small 4 inch stick bait would outfish a 5 inch one in the early spring. Only reason I can see for that is the shad forage is smaller.

Thanks for the tip Old Plug. Will check them out. As for colors, water clarity is an important factor. Imitative minnow/shad colors are my go to depending on clarity. If murky toss a bigger bait in your favorite color. I like the 128-130mm baits(5") a lot, 3.5"-4.5" is prime time mostly but I carry bigger, smaller, and some high end floaters for low clear river conditions. Been trying out some Duo Realis baits, good results so far. Run well, nicely made, cheaper than a Mega or LC.

OP, yes good points on confidence in you bait and size of your bait in relation to shad size.

How the bait rides and the action you impart are the key. I keep a box of trebles of various sizes and wire thicknesses and will adjust so the bait is neutral slightly head down and use only light (max 8#) flouro line. Some guys use lead but I find switching hooks works better for me. With the water in the low 40s I start S L O W and adjust until I get bit. They WILL hit it, just gotta figure out how they want it. Yes, I have my favorite colors, but of course they are TOP SECRET.......
