We decided to do a some pre fishing today and finish it off with a little crappie fishing. We started out throwing the Arig and jerk bait on the break at Hawker Point and worked aroung the main lake point and down the bluff to no avail. We ran on down to Ruark and went up Sons and back into Powerline Cove where we found some 42,3 degree water. Again nothing on the rig or the jerk so i tried a grn pumpkin and orange craw tube on a 3/8oz wobble head. I picked up two decent keeps in 17fow off the secondary points on the sunny side banks. We went back to Ruark and hit a deep channel swing with a jig then worked back up the bluff to the second pocket with no luck. We decided to spend our last hour in Hartley Cove crappie fishing. Ive never seen as massive shad balls in there as i did today. My sonar wouldn't penetrate them and i went from marking 40 to 42fow to 19 and 20fow directly over the top of them. they were everywhere and we did manage a nice mess. Partner was using electric chicken and i was using blue ice bobby garland shadR's on 1/8oz jigs heads. The crappie were right in the shad balls. Overall not too bad a day with beautiful weather. the water is starting to warm a little and we did catch a few more fish over Saturday. Dont think I'll give her a shot tomorrow with the 30plus mph winds they are predicting.

Sounds like the shad ball bite is starting to get better. Nice job and thanks for the report!

I fished up north today (launched at RB). Caught a limit this morning on jigs with most of them coming near deeper brush. Did catch a few chasing shad. The fish were anywhere from 24-34 feet down in 28-48 feet of water.

Tried for some walleye with a bottom bouncer early this afternoon but failed miserably.

You all go wear them out over the next few weeks! It's back to night shifts for me.

Is that you, duckydoty? :)

If true, then the annual crappie convention is starting pretty early this year. Thanks for the report, SRJ.

LOL, don't be "duckydotying" us Jim. No head fakes or tall tales. People's hard earned gas money is at stake.

Seriously though. We caught some up there this weekend. 25-30' up Sons creek. 40' in Hartley for us. They were biting well once you found them if you could stay on top of them

when we pulled into powerline cove there was several boats stacked up near the bluff on piles when we left 4 boats were still there they musta been on them pretty good. i goofed up pretty bad when i pulled into hartley i sit down right on top of a big brush pile in 42fow of water and forgot to mark it. your right it was pretty hard to stay on a particular ball of shad but good thing about it they was everywhere. we probly screwed up by not crappie fishing to start with because we didnt have any wind for the jerkbait bite but bout the time we pulled into hartley around 1:00 or so the breeze picked up a bit. I'm tempted to try it first thing in the morning if the wind is out of the southeast like they say, the cove might be protected a little from the wind.

Also was up yesterday and I'm sure we saw a few of you. Put in at Mutton Creek, fished between M.C. and Powerline Cove. Couldn't get the crappie to bite, however we didn't' find shad balls either. Only caught 2, both on jerkbaits, one on a main lake point and one on a secondary point. Slow for us but it was a BEAUTIFUL day on the water. Tight Lines All!

the only shad ball i ran across besides in hartley was a small one saturday at chicken rock. talked to a friend from greenfield who fished around point 9 and his partner lost one nice crappie at the boat and that was it. 2short i bet we ran right past you at powerline i have the burgandy ranger that went on back in the cove a ways. everyone else was pretty much clustered in the mouth on the bluff

It's a popular color scheme on crappie soft baits, Phil. Half pink, half sparkly chartreuse.

That would be the perfect job: Color Namer for a lure company. Two of my favorite Reef Runner designs: Cheap Sunglasses and Monkey Puke. :)

I found those bait balls in Hartley Cove there Saturday lol. Threw and A-rig down to them to see if there were any bass and this is what I came up with! 10544418_10204632699230057_6414455620915
