Slice Of Summer...and Deadsticking

Weather was wet here yesterday and nasty today. Worked on some video from last summer to stay warm, in between working on heads. Thought it might be fun to see some shorts and green grass instead of gore tex and stocking hats.

What a neat video. A warm, sunny summer day spent fishing with a son and catching fish. One of life's greatest moments. I have tons of these memories fishing with my 3 sons and now my grandson and would not trade them for anything.

Dave, what size/brand push button reel would you recommend for a large 3 year old?

my son's cartoon rod & reel combo doesnt reel in the line unless you hold tension against it.

Any ideas?

Trophy, I can't speak for Dave but I have always had luck with the good old Zebco 33's for young kids. Even better luck with the Zebco 33 Classic. There are some high priced spincast like the Zebco Omega ($80!) and not sure how those perform considering the cost. Could be a good option for kids, wives, or someone that doesn't have much experience fishing. My 2 cents.

The one in the video is a mid-range 33. Not the Walmart cheapie, but not the Omega either. It works, ratio is a little slow on the 33's. Bought a couple of the BPS green reelreels, model escapes me. Both the kids like that one. Has a 4:1 ratio (same as an old 4600 really) and a decent handle and drag. I may have even thrown a redfin with one on a 7' rod and some braid. Might be too tall for him, but worth a look.

Mine are sort of transitioning between reels. Some spincast, lot of spinning, hit and miss attempts at baitcasting.

after checking into the zebco yall isted, I discovered that some models dont have anti-reverse.

Im pretty sure thats a bad idea to give a kid any reeel without anti-reverse. I can see the birdnest from here

I might start him on the 22, since its smaller, finding the right length rod will be tricky.

You can't backlash a spincast. That is the beauty of it and what makes it great for starting out anglers and kids. The only issue that you run into with spincast reels is when they gets loops in them (much like spinning reels) and it fouls up inside the reel casing and down in the gears/drive shaft. Not a big deal and you just pop off the top half and can usually fix it. That being said I would recommend doing two things. If the reel comes pre-spooled just take all that off there because not only is that line complete junk but who knows how long that line has been on there and it's coiled and curled like nobodies business. And secondly make sure you have enough line with you in the boat to quickly respool the whole reel as you can get some real (reel) humdingers of a mess when they do foul up. Best to just cut the line out and start over as it's not only quicker than untangling but the line gets chewed up pretty bad with all the gears grinding on the line.
