Terrierman Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 C'mon, you can do it!!! Uh oh I need to take a little walk when I get home ness 1
ness Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 Got tomato plants going strong in the house under lights. Some of them are five inches high and that is after we repotted them last weekend and buried the starts two thirds deep in the new pots. Pepper starts three inched high now. I am afraid it will be a jungle in here before it is warm enough outside. Did transplant lettuce starts and broccoli into the bed last weekend too. They have done well under the covers. Have more lettuce that we will fill in the bed this weekend. I put hinges on one side of the bed so it will be easier to prop the covers for ventilation during warm days. Did get new dirt mixture in six tubs too, DSC_0012.JPG DSC_0013.JPG Billet That's a great setup you've got there, BH. You can really get things going sooner and keep them going later with that arrangement. John
ness Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 Most of the 'action' in my 2015 garden in still indoors: Maters, peppers, Alpine strawberries. Maters, herbs, strawberries. It's all really far behind. I guess that happens when you start 4-6 weeks late. I just couldn't get very good germination on my onion seeds, so I went out and bought plants. That's them in the back and there's some garlic in front of it. Carrot seeds under the cardboard. I read that covering carrot seeds will keep moisture in, insulate a a little, and help those notoriously slow carrot seeds along. I'll let you know how that goes. My cold frame got some new windows: Red bud bud status: John
BilletHead Posted March 25, 2015 Author Posted March 25, 2015 Where you may be a bit behind we may be a bit ahead. Good grief I may be in trouble by the time I can get these in the ground, Peppers to the right and we will repot them soon like we have the maters once. Going to start some basil from the seed we got from the plants last year. Just seen the weather it is 45 up in Nessville and 65 right now in BilletHeadville . I need to check my asparagus too, BilletHead "We have met the enemy and it is us", Pogo If you compete with your fellow anglers, you become their competitor, If you help them you become their friend" Lefty Kreh " Never display your knowledge, you only share it" Lefty Kreh "Eat more bass and there will be more room for walleye to grow!" ness Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 That's what my situation usually looks like -- too much, too soon. I usually start making phone calls around now to lay off the surplus. There are some folks that won't get what they're used to this year. I suppose I ought to warn them. John
ness Posted April 4, 2015 Posted April 4, 2015 Cut my first asparagus of the year this morning: We bottomed out at around 25* last night, so these guys are a little soft. Seth, Terrierman, BilletHead and 1 other 4 John
ness Posted April 6, 2015 Posted April 6, 2015 I have an area of the yard that was originally going to be a lansdscape border with a spruce, some shrub roses, perennial flowers, shrub dogwood, creeping juniper. Over the years my idea for that area has changed, and last fall I pulled out the dogwood and juniper (which are both pretty invasive) and some other stuff and left a pretty good-sized open area that gets a lot of sun. I had my gooseberry plant in there, and with all the new space I decided to put in a couple more gooseberries and three currant plants. I toyed with a couple other ideas (grape vines, more raspberries), but decided I'd go with fruit-bearing shrubs instead. Easier to maintain, and better suited to the landscape-iness of that spot. I'll report back in the 2017 or 2018 garden threads John
BilletHead Posted April 9, 2015 Author Posted April 9, 2015 Garden still coming along. Lettuce and broccoli going like crazy. Had to add another set of sides to the beds as it was starting to hit the Plexiglas covers. I am hoping after tonight I will not have to cover these plants. Not supposed to freeze or frost but calling for the upper thirties . Going to transfer covers to the tomato bed. Speaking of tomato plants. I have to get them outside this weekend. Hoping for the best but with some the height of over eighteen inches they have to go out. I even found a bloom on one plant? Go figure? If I can remember next year will not start them so soon. I will plant these plants real deep. Two thirds to three quarters of the plant height. Peppers large too but I will babysit them in the house a bit longer. Got my horseradish from in the fridge into tubs also. I just did not think it was big enough to use so I will give it another year and see this Fall. Some pictures, Lettuce bed, some broccoli in there too. You can compare how it has grown from earlier in this garden thread. Seth Posted April 10, 2015 Posted April 10, 2015 I envy your gardens. There are just too many other things I like to do this time of year to make me want to spend much time on a garden. Once turkey season is over with, I will start focusing on my garden. Maybe that will change once I get a little bit older. Hard to beat the taste of garden grown veggies. ness 1
