I've used some super cheap ones on my spider rig rods and hooked more stumps than I care to remember. The drag was put to the test several times. And my others don't engage drag very often for bass and such. When they do, it's a little slip here and there, no drag scorchers so far. Other than stumps.

I hear ya on durability. So far, I've been pretty happy with my cheaper ones. Maintenance is equally important as you know. Until one fails, I'm happy.

Something else I've noticed, the new reels don't always come with a spare spool, 2014 Sahara 2500 didnt have a spare.

It drives me nuts sometimes, not having a backup spool on hand.

The last few lew's reels i have bought came with a spare spool but my Diawa and Shimano reels haven't either. I thought the new revo and orra spinning reels came with them but i could be wrong.

These are all great suggestions & I appreciate y'all's input.

I guess I could be like Ned & cut the bail off & learn to back reel. Lol

I thought about it on one that had a bad spring, but chickened out and ordered a spring for it. Pretty good $1.75 spent.

Metal prices. The Excelers used to come with a spare, and both models in the same size were interchangeable. I would not be surprised if any Daiwa 3000 spool with the same footprint would not swap between the models.

Have picked several up for min on eBay. Absolute life savers on the water.

From what I can tell, it comes with one spool which is both braid ready and designed to also better manage floro. I would call whatever retailer offers it and check on that.

The guys at Fin and Feather in Springfield also recommended the Okuma Trio. Especially for the smooth drag. I bought one and it's a nice size reel. Can't give an action report yet.

I have 3 Okuma reels and the drag system is smooth and silky, some parts are plastic on reels I think but as mush as I use them they are great. Bought one when on vacation in Florida on recommendation from my wife's cousin who lives down there and bought 2 more the following year. I believe mine are the Epixor which were $59 at that time which was several years ago and they are still going strong.

I purchased an Okuma Trio last year and so far have been very happy with it.

My past experience with Okuma's was that they were heavy and line capacity was low = smallish spools, but that may have ALL changed since then.
