Swimbaits on the Rock, part 2

Richy, Or anyone else for that matter that are big bait chuckers,

What are your thought's on throwing them on straight braid? Or perhaps braid to a mono leader. I believe Matt at tactical bassin' does the braid to leader combo.

Most guys (myself included) do not advocate the use of braid for big swimbaits. When I first got in to swimbaits, I felt more secure using braid but quickly gave up on that. Straight fluoro or mono all the way. I like Big Game but pretty much exclusively use P-Line PF in 15-30# on my setups. Only exception is my frog rod which I sometimes use to throw lunker punkers (some sizes/materials just walk easier with braid) which is usually spooled with 50# PP. For more info I suggest checking out Swimbait Underground and search for threads on line choice, tons of good info

that looks like a nuclear plant in the background, if so good areas to fish

Correct, Wolf Creek in Kansas.

doctor!

can't tell you how many times people said I was crazy for buying Deps

they would never pay that much for a lure....well look what that money can get ya!

Pictures like this just boost my confidence in that bait

Just have to shop around. I have 3 175's now, Ayu, Clear Smelt, and Flash Carp. Most I paid was $55, cheapest was $37. I know guys that have spent more than that on 1 ww or 110.

Also not a fan of straight braid. Backlash once with a heavy, sinking swimbait and it'll make sense why. I understand the concern about not wanting to lose and expensive bait, but if you check your line/knot often and don't do anything foolish it's really hard to lose a bait with 20 or 25lb copoly.

Please forgive the newbie question:

When looking at the DEPS 175 online, seems as though there is a model with a bill, and a model without a bill?

Recommendations please sirs.

The one with a bill is a "Silent Killer" and without a "Slide Swimmer." There are a lot of Slide Swimmers floating around the secondary market that are in fact modified Silent Killers. I've never fished a modded one, but apparently the 250s work well, modified 175s not so much. I just picked up a new 175 straight from Japan for $55, definitely cheaper than dealing with US retailers unfortunately. You can get them even cheaper in certain colors

Kietech's maybe a "swimbait", but not the "swimbaits" we're talking about.lol

A backlash with braid and a heavy single swimbait(2oz plus) causes a "shock load" on the line and will usually cause it to snap. And i did initially use a 30lbs braid with a mono leader, but lost too many baits due to the braid to mono connection breaking or coming apart (invisa-braid).

A 7:1 reel personally is too fast for a glide bait as you can easily over work the bait, which can give the impression that it doesnt swim very well.

I use 15lbs test big game mono for up to 3oz baits and 20 or 25lbs test for heavier baits. Check your line frequently for Knicks and cuts. I'll often retie 2 to 4 times during the day.
