Bass Enforcer Posted April 3, 2015 Posted April 3, 2015 Hey guys and or gals. My boat is currently at the lake so I can't measure my hub nut. I'm sure the size can very but there may be a normal size. I'm wanting to take mine off to make sure it's clean of any foreign objects. I don't mind buying a couple of different sizes but I'm hoping I can limit it to just a couple different ones. Can anyone tell me what size of socket is typical? Thanks.
motoman Posted April 3, 2015 Posted April 3, 2015 I actually just used my pair of jumbo Channel Locks. I didn't have the right size socket myself. (And I have some jumbo sockets too) - The hub nut is not on very tight either. When you're done; everything I've read is you just torque it back down to where it is not too snug; so the wheel spins free; but tight enough to where there's no lateral play in the wheel. Kind of a 'sweet' spot.........if that makes sense.
Bass Enforcer Posted April 3, 2015 Author Posted April 3, 2015 Hmmmm. I thought they need to be pretty tight. I was just watching fishing university with Ray Brazier an ex boat racer and a mechanic guru. He was saying get'em tight. A mechanic..I am not.
GNSfishing Posted April 3, 2015 Posted April 3, 2015 Mercury 225 Pro XS is an 1-1/16 nut and it is torqued to 100 Ft lbs
Champ188 Posted April 3, 2015 Posted April 3, 2015 Could you guys be talking about different kinds of hubs ... prop hubs vs. trailer wheel hubs? Muddy Water 1
dtrs5kprs Posted April 3, 2015 Posted April 3, 2015 Could you guys be talking about different kinds of hubs ... prop hubs vs. trailer wheel hubs? Beat me to it. Sure looks like the malfunction.
fishinwrench Posted April 3, 2015 Posted April 3, 2015 There is no benefit whatsoever to cranking your prop nut down to 100 ft/lbs. Just snug it up firmly and set your pin or locking tabs. This allows the hub to do what it is designed to do. Sac River Jim 1
GNSfishing Posted April 3, 2015 Posted April 3, 2015 So what the mercury manual calls for 100 ft/lbs to fully seat the rear bushing in the hub. It will be loose if it is not fully seated in the Tempest plus and/or Fury prop.
