Thanks to dtrs5kprs, another angler is biten by the Ned

So Dave sent me some samplers. I haven't used them until yesterday. I wasn't' getting bites (probably fishing too fast). That and the 180+ bass boat tournament traffic along with other weekend anglers and de-winterizing ski boat traffic was making fish a bit skiddish. I found fish. Just couldn't get them to bite.

So after socializing with fellow OAF members on water and searching spots for fish, I buckled down and started focusing hard. Pulled out the Ned rig, glued on a fresh Zman PB&J, and on the very first cast....."thump". I shook my head and chuckled. Keeper bass.

Must have been a fluke. ? Maybe?

Third cast, I let it sit while texting a photo. Lifted slowly to check for weight, something didn't feel right so I set the hook. Bam. Fish #2.

Then on the 6th cast, repeat to check for weight and a hookset yielded a walleye. Or a saugeye? Had more striped colors than most walleye I catch. I was so excited, I released it after measuring (only 16") nd didn't think to get a pic u til it was swimming away. Go figure.

Fourth fish in a different area thumped it and I missed it. Second cast to same place was a short strike and almost pulled the worm off even with glue! Never did get a follow up. But I got 3 fish in 10mins after nothing in the previous hour of fishing.

The quality of Dave's jigheads are great. Durable paint, quality hooks, and just a solid product. Ths is to him and his knowledge of how to fish it (and Quillbacks constant reports of fish on the Ned) I had to give them a try.

Oh.....and I HATE Nanofil line now. I lost 3 of the jigheads for no reason. One on the first cast of a retie. I had just tied it and cast it. As it cast, it flew off about 50yds. I took it off this afternoon and it won't go back. It was a free spool so I had to try it. Won't do it again. I'll stick with what I know.

I bought some heads from Dave and gave it a try Saturday afternoon for the first time also. We caught 8 fish on the little rig, with 3 of those being keeper smallies. The biggest one was just over 3 pounds. I need to practice with it some more to get a better feel for it. We caught over 20 fish with 6 keepers, the rest coming off a brown wart. Great time to spend with Dad.

I had the same luck with Nanofil. Broke off on more fish than I caught with it. Right in the trash it went.

I tried nanofil with a leader and I tried braid with and without a leader. I quit each and use 6 pound YoZuri. Life is simpler now.

Amen. Mono or fluoro straight to the bait is much simpler. Braid and a leader feels like a workaround for a problem that may or may not exist, and probably has an easier answer in any event.

How is the casting rod going? Was looking at some lighter 7' casting rods and ran across a couple of factory sticks that might work. Both from Loomis. Their shakeyhead and drop shot casting rods could work for the Ned. Think it would still make me crazy.

Wow, the " I love the Ned thread" morphed into an "I hate Nano thread". I've used 6,8, and 10 lb. I have it on every spinning reel except two maybe. I am thinking of when I might need to regress back to mono.

I simply have not had the problems you describe. I don't break fish off with it. I'll assume somewhere along the way I have, but less than with mono. When I have, it's been a leader issue. I broke a couple off on Norfork on 1/6/15.

I'm not sponsored and I gain nothing from anyone else using nano, mono, fluro, braid, or sewing thread as a fishing line. It just puzzles me how my experience has been so overwhelmingly positive using Nanofil and others find it to be an expensive, miserable experience.

The two negatives I have with it 1) the twist in it becomes visible and it is more difficult to get out of the line than mono. I can remove most of it and it is largely cosmetic and not (so far) hurt my fishing and 2) it gets pulled on by the wind worst than mono. It weighs nothing and has surface area so it shouldn't be a surprise. The work around is to keep the rod angle low or even allow the nano to float on the surface of the water.

I'm back from my trip south. I took three spinning rods with Nanofil. I caught 115 fish (not impressive really). I lost one lure to a sunken tree and one lure because the hook eye wasn't closed completely and I was using a loop knot. Zero leader failures, zero nano failures. Easy casting, easy strike detection, and easy hooksets. I still love it.

Ham, I don't hate nano. I disliked using a leader and I disliked the spinning rod approach. I found it had a tendency to jump off the reel, even when correctly spooled on. All of these factors contributed to my building the casting rod for the Ned.

dtrs5kprs, I put my Revo MGX on the rod and with 6 pound line I can routinely throw 75 feet with the 1/16th ounce head. I should get my boat back this week and pln to fish this coming weekend. I am looking forward to it.

Well it was my fault I guess. I remember some controversy over the Nano line and while I had a free spool to try, I liked it at first. Saturday I was using a standard Palomar knot and I was breaking off jig heads way too easily.

The point of the thread was the little do nothing rig has now bitten me. And that I wanted to thank Dave for his sample pack and that......I need more. A lot more. :-) I will be fishing this little rig this summer and hope to get my kids on it and any of my relatives that want to go fishing. It's a numbers bait and I like numbers. :-)

So thanks again to Dave for a great product and for all his help and knowledge he has shared here on this forum. While I fished at my home lake (Beaver), this was more about the Table Rock members who so frequently fish and report on the Ned than any other forum here. So I posted this here rather than the General Discussion forum. There are some great members here on the TR forum. So thanks to all of you for your information and willingness to help and discuss. :-)

Nano is picky about knots. Learn to tie leader on with Crazy Alberto. Then use a palomar or improved clinch or loop for whatever you're fishing with. No further problems.

Palomar is not the right knot for tying directly to nano. It will cut itself.

Mono is definitely simpler.
