Browning Guy Posted May 16, 2015 Posted May 16, 2015 Anyone notice the fins on a few of the fish you are catching on TR? Three weeks ago I caught several in the mid James that had a fungus looking growth on their fins. A few were so bad that the end of the fins (all) were showing 1/4" of bone throughout the end of the fins with significant redness on the skin. At first thought it was due to spawning until further investigation and discovered a yellow/white fungus looking goo . Largemouths and Kents only haven't seen any on the small mouth. Fished a tournament this past Saturday and caught 2 keeper kents around KC and they had the same yuck. I put some keep alive in the live well hoping it would kill what ever they had or at least protect the other fish. Culled them out fairly quickly, but still didn't like putting them in the live well. Wonder what's causing it and if anyone else has seen the same? Took a picture of one and will try to download later.
Quillback Posted May 16, 2015 Posted May 16, 2015 I haven't seen it this year, but have seen it in the past, but never more than on a fish or two.
dtrs5kprs Posted May 16, 2015 Posted May 16, 2015 Wonder if it might be a combo of spawn damage and an opportunistic infection? Or they could be taking too many boat rides. Did not notice any in April. Will keep an eye out for it when down in a couple of weeks. mjk86 1
arsenal1477 Posted May 17, 2015 Posted May 17, 2015 Actually, now that you say that, the post below this, "Kimberling City Area 5/15", has a picture of a bass with that same description. Look at the second picture and look at the fins. Is that what you are talking about?
Browning Guy Posted May 18, 2015 Author Posted May 18, 2015 @arseanal1477. Yes, but the fish we had actually had the bones of the fins (all of them) sticking out 1/16th up to a 1/4" from the skin and all were very red. They were well nourished just looked nasty. I saw the same photo you reference and it looks like that fish maybe getting better. I sent an e-mail to MO Conservation and will relay the info if and when they respond. Not sure what the fish looked like years ago during the fish kill on TR. Hope we aren't looking at a repeat.
Sprint21fter Posted May 18, 2015 Posted May 18, 2015 The fish kill period of fish had a fungus/sores on them as well but they had discoloration in their gills. The bass virus kills them thru their gills. When it hit though all sizes of fish were killed instantly. Before the massive outbreak you would see a few floaters in certain sections of the lake. I don't recall remembering any nasty puss or things of that sort.
Members carpelpummel Posted May 26, 2015 Members Posted May 26, 2015 Hope this pic goes through, first time attempting and from cell also so if not will try to do later from the computer. This is not the fungus mentioned here but unsightly none the less. Keeper fish from this weekend around mill creek. Anyone seeing anything similar? Other than the blemish appeared to be a totally healthy spot
Members bburns Posted May 26, 2015 Members Posted May 26, 2015 A buddy of mine caught a smallmouth this weekend with a quarter-sized hole in its belly and its intestines were visible. Like yours it was otherwise healthy and gave a good fight. I'm curious to know what these were caused by. This was in Little Cow Creek.
