Lost my uncle to lightning on Texoma in 1985. He had been fishing but was trying to load up and get off the water because of the coming storm. If you see lightning then it's time to take cover.

I tend to come off or get under a dock when it looks nasty, or starts to rumble. Have had folks laugh at me over it, but you can't predict when or where the first bolt in a front will come down. Would much rather miss a few minutes fishing than end up in a news story.

I was fishing on Stockton several years ago with my dad and started asking me where that humming noise was coming from. Well thanks to Metallica I can't hear very well anymore but I knew exactly what was happening from a prior experience. I grabbed the shaft of the rod to set it down and it shocked the hell out of me. Well you don't have to ask me to leave twice. I was outta there.

I've yet to have this happen. I hope the heck I never do. That would freak me out.

Some good friends of mine lost a friend of theirs on Beaver Lake. He was struck by lightning while on a guided fishing trip. http://5newsonline.com/2015/06/13/man-killed-by-lightning-strike-at-beaver-lake/

Many of us have pushed it by staying too long when storms were moving in. This is a sad reminder to play it safe and get to cover when storms are rolling through.

I'm guilty of the same thing. Watched a storm roll in down at Forsyth one time by the dam and thought I knew what I was doing, pushing it a little to long when all the sudden lightning struck the metal tower and sparks fell in the water by me. Probably the most scared I've ever been. i almost left my pole and everything to get out of there. I feel bad for the guys family who this happened to. Like you, I know them fairly well. I work around there house quite often for the land owner. They are great people and I feel very sorry for them. It's such a sad deal.

At one time I would push the limit, no more. When thunder starts rolling I start looking for a place to hide or just get off the water and hang it up. I will freely admit I have hunkered down on the floor of the boat to make sure I was as low as possible to help my odds of not getting crispy.

Had a very similar thing happen this spring with my dad flysmallie at table rock. By radar and the sky it looked like we had an hour or so. I had a carbon light spinning rod and kept feeling something on my fingers and looked down, you could actually see electricity arching from the screw down reel lock to the blank and was hitting me as well, just a light static electricity type sensation...continued to do the same even after putting it down. We got off the water like RIGHT NOW!
