JestersHK Posted June 29, 2015 Posted June 29, 2015 Made it down for a little fishing this weekend. Needed to make sure the camper wasn't swept away in the Monsoons that have been occurring lately... Started out early at the whistle on Saturday and found the river muddy and running very high as others have reported. Sorry no pics this report... Fish were on the small size and nothing to write home about. The rains Friday night turned the spring to the consistency of chocolate milk. Visibility was less than a foot. Started out in Zone 1 by the Bench by the dam. Caught one small stocker and that was it. We moved down river and I finally started catching fish consistently down right before the bluffs. The bite was soft and honestly with how fast the water was moving there were times I didn't even feel them on the line coming out of the current. Missed a ton, but still managed to snag around a dozen bouncing heavy jigs off the bottom on Saturday. Sunday I hit the water a little later. Same as Saturday spring was still murky and moving fast. Put in down by the bluffs and started working my way back towards the bridge. It was extremely slow going with the high fast water, slicker than snot rocks, and not being able to see your feet... I only caught 5 fish all under 12 inches in about 2 hours. My ankles and knees were sore, and I decided to wrap it up and head back early. Hopefully things clear out and the rain stays away. The fish are there, just have to work a bit harder to find and catch them. Caught all fish on 1/8oz jigs in a Sculpin pattern with Orange head, a Mottled Grey pattern, and the old faithful Olive woolly bugger. The majority were on the Sculpin Orange head I picked up at Phil's place 2 weeks ago.(Thanks Phil these jigs are well made and worked great!) Good luck out there! JestersHK laker67 1
Johnsfolly Posted June 29, 2015 Posted June 29, 2015 JHK - I caught all of my fish on Sat fishing off of the Whistle bridge. I caught 6 drifting a John deere microjig about 20-24" under a small float. I know that I missed at least 2-3X that many. I really like to be able to see the fish before it takes the bait instead of relying on the float to move. What can you do with 10-12" visibility. I did catch 3 using a 1/16 oz black marabou jig and two with a 1/32 white/salmon marabou jig. I was fishing the jigs cross current and fairly fast with a lot of action then a pause. I could see the bait and any fish reaction throughout the retrieve. They all hit on the pause. We were only fishing for 4 1/2 hours with at least 1.5 hours fishing up near the spring without catching any trout. I was pretty happy with the fish we were able to catch considering the visibility issues and the high fast water.
JestersHK Posted June 29, 2015 Author Posted June 29, 2015 Yeah all fishing with the rod tip this weekend. Usually I would barely even feel them on the rod as light as they were hitting. Only had a few good smacks all day. I would get a medium to fast rythm going on the jig, then just watch my line bounce. As soon as the bounce rythm on the line changed I'd do a quick snap up for the hook set. At that point I'd either be snagged on the bottom or have a fish on LOL. I alternated all day between fast and slow depending on the drift. Tried drifting a few micro jigs as well and a San Juan Worm with nothing to show for it... Glad you were able to land some. rumrunner 1
