2sheds Posted July 2, 2015 Posted July 2, 2015 Stopped by on my drive back to Dallas to refill the SnakeFeeders last week - Purina Snake Chow plus a few mice. Also took the opportunity to wet my line. Water higher and faster than I have ever experienced during my summer trips. Plenty of fun once I got it figured. Lost 2 outrageous fish into the rootwads (I was not man enough to handle them on a 2-wt rod with 5x tippet !). But was able to bring several close enough to kiss. Thank you everyone for taking such great care of this gem.

Ham Posted July 3, 2015 Posted July 3, 2015 IF I was [posting trip reports on creeks and rivers, I think I would have snake in every trip report title and mention snakes as often as possible. I love snakes and really will never understand the unreasonable fear. I think it is more than likely I will eventually take a hit from a copperhead, but that's a cross I will bear when my time comes. trythisonemv Posted July 3, 2015 Posted July 3, 2015 I have still yet to see a cottonmouth down there. Ton of Brown water snakes and a copperhead but no cottonmouths. I'd imagine they are there though. I may try Monday if my wife will let me.

2sheds Posted July 8, 2015 Author Posted July 8, 2015 A few years ago at the Swinging Bridge Access, I ran into a biologist from SMSU who was carrying a 5-gallon plastic bucket. I thought - What a cool way to carry my stuff through the brambles to stash down at the river. Turns out he was collecting pregnant female cottonmouths. Said that Crane was a great habitat, easy to collect lots of them in just a few minutes. And that is why I do all my fishing from my car with the windows rolled up. Bill Anderson 1
Nighthawk Posted July 9, 2015 Posted July 9, 2015 A couple years ago a fishing buddy and I ran into some MSU students doing the same thing. They had a cottonmouth in a cloth bag and they dumped him/her out on the gravel for us to see. They said the same thing, when they want to catch one, they come to Crane.
Terrierman Posted July 9, 2015 Posted July 9, 2015 Crane Creek is my favorite place for cottonmouth viewing too. It's awesome snake country. The only place I've ever seen more water moccasins is on Beaver Creek. Ham 1
