Ham Posted July 7, 2015 Posted July 7, 2015 I got to make a short trip with my son who is a town for a few days. Fished Rim Shoals from 10 am until 1 Pm. We caught about 40. They were running half the water projected at about 2000 CFS. A south wind of near 10 mph was annoying. And the water had some stain from recent rain. Fish bit well starting with the first cast. We made the run down to the mouth of Crooked Creek, but it was mocha latte. Nothing big. Largest rainbow was 16 inches. We lost a couple of Browns and a decent Cuttie. We lost a bunch of fish for some reason. Oh well. Nice day on the river. We saw a few other boats, but zero stress and zero conflict. Members Mac's Orphan Posted July 7, 2015 Members Posted July 7, 2015 Sounds like a good day! Always had good luck just standing in the shoals - and trying not to fall down!! LOL! The last time I fished Rim Shoals, which was several years ago (around 1997), they only charged $1.00 for wading access (no boat) - do you know what the cost is now? If I'd known I was gonna live this long, I would have taken better care of myself...
Terrierman Posted July 7, 2015 Posted July 7, 2015 Love that river, I need to get down there again. Glad you had a good day with your son.
Ham Posted July 7, 2015 Author Posted July 7, 2015 Mac, there was never a fee to wade in since I've been down there. There is a small fee to be taxied down river and returned at a set time, but be aware that very much water above minimum flow is going to make things tough, and minimum flow ain't really a picnic. A kayak or boat at minimum flow opens up a world of options though. Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. On Instagram @hamneedstofish

They used to have a box to put your dollar in if no one was around the place. Yeah - agreed - I've been ok wading at shipps ferry with one or two on - any more than that and it's not worth the risk! My son and I have floated the river, but really would rather wade fish. Thanks Ham - glad you had a good day! The White definitely commands respect! Ham Posted July 7, 2015 Author Posted July 7, 2015 Two things 1) You can use a boat or kayak to access areas to wade. I really wonder why more people don't do this and 2) the developing grass beds are going to be another option for people looking to catch fish. So far I have not caught anything larger than say 17 inches off of a grass bed and most are going to be under 14 inches, but the trout and warm water fish are definitely making a home there. rps Posted July 8, 2015 Posted July 8, 2015 Rim and the hole above, Redbud?, are two of my favorite memory locations. Years and years ago, long before the catch and release was established, a group of us stayed at the"resort" there. Dreadful. Non working toilets, moldy carpets, awful. From what I understand the present owners have repaired and have a wonderful location. But we caught many fish there. I later took my father for a trip and we stayed up river, but fished there. Many many fish of decent size. The last time my father fished was a guide trip with Elvin, the Gassville lawman and brown trout specialist (is he still guiding? alive?) and we fished those two shoals/holes most of the day. Ham 1
Members Mac's Orphan Posted July 8, 2015 Members Posted July 8, 2015 I've been fishing there since the 70's. Never saw a box. Pete A guy named John Gulley (who now guides the Norfork, White, Little Red and striper fishing on Lake Norfork) took me there the first time I fished the shoals. He told me it coast a dollar to fish the place and put 2 bucks in a cigar box sitting on a shelf. That was in 1985. That's all I know.... Maybe John put the box there and was pilfering me!!! Haven't been there but 5 or 6 times and the last time was 20 years ago. Anyway - Good on ya' Ham. Spending a day with your son is time well spent. Glad you could get together for some good times. snagged in outlet 3 Posted July 8, 2015 Posted July 8, 2015 I know John pretty well, or at least I did. I haven't seen him in 7 or 8 years since my dad died. They were friends, that's how I got to know him. The first pictures of me down in the Mountain Home area I had to only be 4 or 5 years old. My mom's family had a resort in Gamaliel. Been hooked ever since. Pete
