dtrs5kprs Posted July 23, 2015 Posted July 23, 2015 Most everything we caught was 12-13' of water. So the 6XD was on the bottom. I don't know if there was any water running Saturday or not? But for the most part everything was on the down current or down lake side of a point. The fish were really schooled up, if you got one to bite it would fire the entire school up. My partner had 3 doubles on one crankbait. For the most part we were throwing it on 12-15# fluorocarbon line, 7' 10" Bass Pro Cranking Stick and a 5.1:1 reel. They were not on every point, you just had to look for them, but it didn't take but it din't take long to find out if they were there or not. I also used the new 8XD some and caught several on it. It will get down to 20', and I was using it out deeper to see if I could get a better Largemouth bite when we were catching Kentuckies up in the shallower water. There is no magic to it, you just have to have the right equipment and hit points till you find them. Once you do its a ball. Thats good info right there. Sounds like cranking back in the old days at Truman when the water was running (every day except the weekends usually, lol). Champ188 1
Guest Posted July 23, 2015 Posted July 23, 2015 Ive had similar success at beaver with fat free shads way up the war eagle & white river. Usually there are crappie, whites .& walleye mixed with those same fish. Sounds like I need to dust of the cranking rod & buy a couple 8XDs. Aside from the Ned, cranking is my favorite way to fish.
mjk86 Posted July 23, 2015 Posted July 23, 2015 Anyone use that 10xd? I dont have a rod big enough to throw that but it looks awesome. Ive considered buying 1 or 2 for long lining.

Champ188 Posted July 23, 2015 Posted July 23, 2015 While admitting that I've yet to try the XD series and that they must be some fine baits, I've learned from experience and observing some very good deep crankers that the big Fat Free Shad and the Rapala DT16 and DT20 are awfully hard to beat. dtrs5kprs and Codywskeeter1521 2
bobw Posted July 23, 2015 Posted July 23, 2015 The 10XD will work, I did throw one some but the fish were not that deep. And at $15 a pop vs $5 for a 6XD you really don't want to throw a bait that will run 20+ and hang it up and break it off. We did loose a few 6XD's to stuff you couldn't see under the water. The 10XD really works good when the fish are way out off some of the long sloping points and you can't get to them with any other crankbait. That would normally be the case now if the water was a normal pool.
Fish24/7 Posted July 23, 2015 Posted July 23, 2015 WHATEVER YOU DO! do not grind half the lip off of a big fat free to make it a shallower diver

I've had limited experience with the 10XD but I do like it. I am throwing mine on a 7'10MH BPS Crankin Stick with a Lew's 5.6:1 reel on 12# Seaguar Red Label. I'm ticking bottom at around 24ft but I think I could get it a bit deeper. Some guys claim 40 feet on a cast with them but I just don't see that unless you are long lining or trolling. I've said this in another thread a month or two back but I like the 10XD because they cast well (they should weighing in at 2 oz's!) and also because they have a steep dive angle that gets them to depth rather quickly.

I just don't have the balls to be throwing caution (expensive plastic) into the wind/wood. Wiggle warts, DD22s, Poe's and others I don't have an issue getting a little nutty around cedars.

Hmm I figured id need a heavier rod for that crank, good to know. Im gonna pull the trigger on a few i think cuz i wanna troll em.
