BilletHead Posted August 12, 2015 Posted August 12, 2015 Well Bob the big boy is sill watching over the valley, BilletHead Oh by the way when we buzzed through Yellowstone Park from point "A to point B" we learned that a couple days before a hiker had been found to be killed by a grizzly and partially eaten and cached for a later meal. We also fished a lake near Cody yesterday morning where at the parking spot had a sign saying there had been grizzly human conflicts in the past. While walking into the lake we smelled death like a carcass or something. Sure enough there was a cow carcass pretty much wasted away and dried up. A cold chill came over me. On the way out of that lake we ran into another couple coming in. They told us they had talked to a local rancher that had lost a cow in a different spot and had seen three bear on that carcass, BilletHead ness 1 "We have met the enemy and it is us", Pogo If you compete with your fellow anglers, you become their competitor, If you help them you become their friend" Lefty Kreh " Never display your knowledge, you only share it" Lefty Kreh "Eat more bass and there will be more room for walleye to grow!" Lancer09 Posted August 12, 2015 Posted August 12, 2015 The bears out there are no joke, unfortunately too many people don't take them seriously enough..
ness Posted August 12, 2015 Author Posted August 12, 2015 Yeah, I heard about that bear killing. Last I heard mamma and a cub are on death row. Second cub at large. John
ness Posted August 12, 2015 Author Posted August 12, 2015 Man a lot of that looks familiar! We went in to Cody as well to buy a sleeping bag one day, drove right past the Shoshone, and that statue out in the middle of the field too! There was some good water in the park and I hit some but I think you could have done better outside of the park, just my opinion. Seemed to be a LOT of people fishing in the park while we were there, including ourselves. We drove through Pinedale on our way up there.. It looks like it would actually be a pretty fun place to stay for a few days in the summer when the crowds are there. I'd say there is a decent chance we crossed paths or nearly did and didn't even know it! I'm glad you had a great time out there. Like you i've started planning already based more around the fishing, and what I know I'll like. I know camping for 8 days isn't in the cards for me next time. I'm getting one of those cabins next year. I'm kinda torn on camping vs. lodging. Not a big camper these days, but if that's what it takes to get to the right spots without a lot of extra driving, I'd do it. If we could find cabins with kitchen facilities closer to the action, I'd prefer to do that. The idea for this trip didn't come until about May, and the lodging choices were very limited -- especially around Yellowstone. I'd probably be smart to start getting lodging figured out for next year right now. John
BilletHead Posted August 13, 2015 Posted August 13, 2015 There is something about camping in and around where you want to be like you said Ness. The pickup camper we have suits the purpose quite nice. We have our own same bed every night and kitchen facilities though small fit the bill nicely. Not enough room for a good fight in here but we rest well . We can be on the water in minutes instead of hours. Most expensive private camping has been 40 bucks a night for full hook ups which we do not need. Public hook ups electric and water 10 bucks to no hook ups for 3 and a half bucks. Pretty cheap we think., BilletHead "We have met the enemy and it is us", Pogo If you compete with your fellow anglers, you become their competitor, If you help them you become their friend" Lefty Kreh " Never display your knowledge, you only share it" Lefty Kreh "Eat more bass and there will be more room for walleye to grow!" ness Posted July 13, 2016 Author Posted July 13, 2016 Just read this article, and it's really kinda sad in a way. Our family stayed there a number of times. John
ness Posted July 15, 2016 Author Posted July 15, 2016 OK -- so I posted the wrong link. Here's the right one. tho1mas 1 John
ColdWaterFshr Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 Just now reading your report, Ness, I'm a bit behind! Sad to hear about the Cascade Cottages. Really liked staying there -- they seemed like super nice folks.
ness Posted July 18, 2016 Author Posted July 18, 2016 I forgot you had stayed there too. They were very cool little places, and I really loved staying there. I gave Richard a call the other day and talked to him for a while. Tried to wedge into a cabin one last time but they're booked -- as usual. He's about the nicest guy on the planet, and Grace was a sweetheart. He was pretty sad about it I think. Here's a couple pics of our favorite cabin. This one is outside the park and over near the Beaver Meadows entrance. I guess it's staying in the family, but they didn't open it up this year. This is the house Grace grew up in. He said he recently read a letter from Grace's mom to her dated 1935 saying they were going to build a house in Colorado. This is it -- they finished it in 1938. John
ColdWaterFshr Posted July 25, 2016 Posted July 25, 2016 Yep. Thats the same cabin we stayed at. One of our best vacations. ness 1
