balsabee Posted October 16, 2015 Posted October 16, 2015 The hummingbird and lowrance thread got me to thinking more about trying vexilar and Ray marine and using an iPad which comes out with a 12 inch screen in November. A lifeproof case and locking ram mount would be a great setup. Only negatives I can think of might be glare, overheating and not being able to network. Thoughts? If Ray marine adds side scan with it's current down scan I know I'm pulling the trigger.
motoman Posted October 16, 2015 Posted October 16, 2015 I was concerned with the glare thing myself. So I downloaded the free vexilar app and you can run a demo mode and fiddle with settings for free. And surprisingly, my new iPhone 6 Plus did a MUCH better job than I thought it would outside. Same amount of glare as my lowrance units. - So I may just end up going with the vexilar or raymarine wifi setup myself and ditch my lowrance units.......I get tired of lugging them in and out of the boat every time we go out, when I can use my smartphone that's already with me.

Seems to apply here. im with you rps.........I'm not a big tech guy.........and my wife and I just needed new smartphones which is why we got the iPhone 6 Plus (she needs it for work); then when I saw these wi-fi setups for the boat; I was just blown away.ni still just shake my head at how darn cool it all is! - Both the vexilar and raymarine setups, I believe are under $200 too! - Hey balsa; I've heard a lotta buzz of raymarine coming out with side scan.........is that the word on the streets?.......or people just wishful thinking:-( (or maybe word on the street and wishful thinking are the same thing?:-P
Fish24/7 Posted October 17, 2015 Posted October 17, 2015 I've been using the Vexilar T-pod for about a year now. It's been reliable and is simple to operate w/ my phone. I used it quite a bit last winter while fishing from the bank and it is very useful.
aarchdale@coresleep.com Posted October 17, 2015 Posted October 17, 2015 My Iphone over heats a little to easy, It also will say heat warning if it is in the cold for to long

I'm just wishful thinking. Just as soon as I buy the down scan model they are guaranteed to come out with side scan the moment the 30 day return policy expires. The navionics split screen feature is awesome for both vexilar and Ray marine.

Cause if it was that easy; there would be no point buying sidescan? - Laugh away if needed; no hurt feelings here.:-P
Members OzarksExtremeOutdoors Posted October 18, 2015 Members Posted October 18, 2015 We have used the Vexilar on the kayak and can say it definitely was beneficial to us with smaller space to work with. I believe that the tablet that they are releasing this fall will have a glare resistant screen at least that is what the guys at the Vexilar booth told us at ICast this past July. If you pull the trigger let us know as we plan on carrying these at our shop this next spring and we have all the ram adapters and cases to go with it. The split screen with Navionics is awesome and the fact that one unit can signal three devices is another plus, at least for us kayak anglers.
Moswimb8slinger Posted October 18, 2015 Posted October 18, 2015 If you would like, i can let you try out the vexilar sonarphone t-box 200 I use in my kayak. With the tablet, the Navionics/Sonar split screen feature is much better to view on a larger screen (like a tablet). And it works with Navionics SonarCharts Live feature also. Here's a few screenshots from my Galaxy S5 OzarksExtremeOutdoors 1
