Oh wow- that is a relief.  I was real bummed out for a second.  Thanks for the help yall.  Looks like it might get fixed for relatively cheap.  I like this mercury- feels way better than the Suzuki's I have owned.  And the shift on the handle is great.

Welp now I have realized that the prop shaft is bent.  Crap.  Anyone know the most economic way to fix this?  Looks like its either find a used LU, get a machine shop to straigten the shaft and then have to rebuild the gearbox or do a redneck repair and bent the shaft with a pipe of something.

You can either spend 300.00 on a prop shaft and seal kit.  OR you can buy a replacement LU for 450.00 then sell your driveshaft, gear set, and housing (if it is undamaged) separately and almost break even.

My Dad has had a machine shop straighten out prop shafts before. You might try that first and see if that doesn't fix your problem without doing anymore LU work.

I wasn't there, but I think they pulled the prop shaft.

Took it to a machine shop that said they could get it straightened.  The splines were not twisted so the machinist said it would straighten out with minimal problems.  If it works it sure beats buying a new shaft or a new LU.  Thanks for the input fellas.  Hopefully I will be posting fish pictures with this boat soon instead of repair questions.
