bassman1308 Posted October 23, 2015 Posted October 23, 2015 I'm seem to have old,, clumsy hands and have a hard time tying knots with the small line & flies. I have a tool that makes tying ' nail knots' easy for me . I can't find anything recommending using that knot to tie on your fly, hooks. Does anyone use or have experience with this knot for tying on your smaller flies, lures? JC
jdmidwest Posted October 24, 2015 Posted October 24, 2015 Not much different than a cinch knot. I only use a nail knot to join two lines. "Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously." — Hunter S. Thompson
Fishingmill Posted October 24, 2015 Posted October 24, 2015 Nail knot is used to connect two differently sized lines. I also use a clinch knot to tie my tippet to the fly and have very few fish break me off. instagram.com/fishingmill twitter.com/Fishingmill vimeo.com/fishingmill
fishinwrench Posted October 24, 2015 Posted October 24, 2015 Probably the most simple, yet strong knot for smallish flys is the figure 8 or Davy knot. I even taught it to my 6 year old for her crappie/bluegill jigs and she mastered it immediately.
DaddyO Posted October 25, 2015 Posted October 25, 2015 What Wrench said about the Davy Knot. It's, pretty much, the only knot that I use to connect the fly to the tippet. However, here is an easier way to tie a Clinch knot using your hemostats.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nQs-iL4gHJk tho1mas 1 DaddyO We all make decisions; but, in the end, our decisions make us.
podum Posted October 25, 2015 Posted October 25, 2015 I got a good tip from a guide that might help. Take a small forceps and fasten it to the bend of your fly hook. It makes for a stable platform to put the line through. Then leave the forceps attached as it will provide the weight to keep the line taught while you finish a clinch knot. You should not release the forceps until you are done tying. Two good benefits: the weight of the forceps provides tension to make managing the light line easier. Second, if you drop the fly, you wont lose it. It will be right there when you pick up the forceps. I wish I had more time more than I wish I had more money.
snagged in outlet 3 Posted October 25, 2015 Posted October 25, 2015 Davey knot all the way. It's smaller, uses less line (fluoro cost $15 per spool) and doesn't curl up the tippet. Pete
