hoglaw Posted November 27, 2015 Posted November 27, 2015 I've had bad tennis elbow this year as a result of fishing with a spinning rod a lot more. Not sure what else could have caused it. I tried icing and nsaids, but I've found something that actually fixes it instead of masking pain. If you've had it, you know how bad it can screw up even the simplest of daily activities, much less fishing or working outside. I bought a "theraband flex bar" on amazon for like 20 bucks. There are videos on YouTube of the tennis elbow exercise so I won't describe it here, but I religiously did 5 sets of 12 reps a day while sitting on my couch. After a week or two it felt much better and after six weeks I'm 100% I have no interest in the company. I only post this because I know how bad tendinitis can mess you up, and this thing was a real blessing for me. If left untreated tennis elbow gets progressively worse and can ultimately require surgery. Fixing it with exercise is infinitely better than taking meds and wearing a brace to deal with it. Hope it helps someone else. grizwilson, Justin Spencer, Plastic_worm and 1 other 4
MOPanfisher Posted November 27, 2015 Posted November 27, 2015 Interesting I will have to look that up. Tennis elbow nearly took me out of fish a few years back. Picking up even a can of coke palm down would bring tears to my eyes, palm up no problem. Set a hook like you meant it and nearly drop the rod. Suffered for over a year and happened to mention it at an annual physical, Dr. took his thumb and pressed down, only time I ever tried to curse, cry and throw a punch at the same time. He put me on a regimen of prescription strength naproxen (an nsaid) and said rest, ice and if not better in 6 weeks come back. In six weeks it was gone after a long time of thinking I had to live with it. It is a maddening malady. So far it hasn't come.back.
Old plug Posted November 27, 2015 Posted November 27, 2015 i do not know how old you are but you can expect it to return. Later it will be your shoulder. My advice is cool it and not press t the minute you feel it coming. I think driving cast rather than full arch cast is what causes it. a driving cast is where you push your fore arm out from your body when you cast. iT puts a lot more stress on your forearm.
GloryDaze Posted November 28, 2015 Posted November 28, 2015 Not sure what happened to me, but got to the point where I could not open a bottle of soda without it hurting. Went to the Dr, got a cortozone shot and never looked back. From here on out... any swelling or pain I will be getting shots. Follow me on Twitter @DazeGlory

Maybe so, but I'll take an exercise solution to drugs or cortisone any time. I have a bad spine issue, degenerating l5s1 disc that bulges every so often. Never got as much relief as I did fro. Getting stronger and working on dead lifts and cleans, the kind of stuff I always thought would hurt my back. You can read up on the tendonitis stuff and make your own decisions. But the exercise I do stretches and strengthens them to help.prevent reinjury. I'm sure there are plenty of quick fixes out there. But if it's something that you struggle with and aren't afraid to commit to work on fixing it the right way, I recommend giving it a shot. tho1mas and Justin Spencer 2
MOPanfisher Posted November 28, 2015 Posted November 28, 2015 Strengthening exercises are always going to be the best solution if possible. Had back issues and thought things like sit ups would kill me, but they actually did the trick. I never found an exercise that helped the tendinitis though until the inflammation was gone.
Old plug Posted November 28, 2015 Posted November 28, 2015 That is true. Eve with arthritis you can improve your mobility somewhat dot short periods. I am glad that anything can help you guys. My problem is pretty advanced arthritis. Even with that exercise will help loosen it up. Trouble is weather like. We are getting right now is going to make it worse.
Hog Wally Posted November 28, 2015 Posted November 28, 2015 I've had 3 cortizone shots in each elbow to no avail. I googled it one night after a day of fishing and a lot of pain and found exercises that I do on a regular basis and the problem is all but over. The exercises are easy I usually do them while on long drives
WeekendWarrior Posted November 28, 2015 Posted November 28, 2015 I am at this point now, either tennis elbow or arthritis on both elbows and after a day of fishing both are sore as all get out. Along with an index finger that I set the hook on a brushpile and hit the bottom of my reel with my knuckle in witch rod came flying out of my hand and still gets sore from last June. It is at the point of doing something, may give it a try Ham 1
Old plug Posted November 28, 2015 Posted November 28, 2015 Weekend warrior --- it could be arthritis. If your over 50 I bet it is. How do you do with shoulders and knees. I can only say be conservative. I know it's real hard to cut down on the way you fish. But you might need to.
