mic Posted December 16, 2015 Posted December 16, 2015 In another thread I talked about how someone was killing wild trout with an elk hair dry with a foam under wing... Decided to tie some. Made two. Sat back to admire my work and noticed I forgot the elk hair. LOL ?. Oh well can try. If not blue gills will love them.
mic Posted December 17, 2015 Author Posted December 17, 2015 Well it took me about six tries and three YouTube videos to figure out this one, but I finally got a couple that I really like. I found out from YouTube this is called a Puterbaugh Caddis. This is a size 14.

mic Posted December 17, 2015 Author Posted December 17, 2015 Thanks... the tricks, at least for me, where: 1. super glue the body down and then tie. 2. take the foam to the near the front of the hook to keep things level for the wing and hackle. 3. Before putting on the wing, trim the hair butts a little, makes things more manageable. 4. After setting the wing, but before trimming the butts, run the thread down the hair some (towards the hook eye) to make a flat area for the hackle; trim any butts that will get in the way of the hackle. 5. After the hackle is in place, pull back the butts and make a line darn pushing them up in the air, whip finish, and make the final trim last. One of the videos used snowshoe hair in a thread dubbing brush instead of hackle. He then trimmed the underneath so the fly would set low in the water. Might try that also
fishinwrench Posted December 17, 2015 Posted December 17, 2015 I actually tie a similar "caddis" (works just fine during mayfly hatches too if you match size/color). But I cut the foam in strips and wrap it around the hook to form a body, leave the hair butts kinda long to act as head and legs. It's a killer. Just a strip of foam and a pinch of hair. Quick, easy, effective all the way down to size 22.

mic Posted December 17, 2015 Author Posted December 17, 2015 Those are killer. If you add foam to the just the top half you could make midge emerger.
