wareaglecamo Posted December 23, 2015 Posted December 23, 2015 I find myself walking endlessly up and down the aisles at BPS trying to make a choice on size, color and brand of both jig head and plastic swimbait to put on an A-Rig . . . I haven't been able to make a decision yet . . . do you have your favorite "pairing" jig head/swimbait to use on the A-Rig??? In recent years I have been able to settle on my favorite favorite topwater, crankbait, jerkbait, etc . . . but this A-Rig thing has been a tough one for me with no real success to report and minimal usage along with loss of confidence in the overall technique itself . . . I'd like to thank everyone on this forum for their willingness to share and priceless input/reports . . . have a wonderful Christmas with your family and friends and thanks again for all your input throughout the year:-)

mjk86 Posted December 23, 2015 Posted December 23, 2015 Keitech swing impact Fat, Keitech swing impact, Keitech easy shiner, Lake fork lures book tail shad. I dont use an arig, but one of my favs is a 4-5inch swing impact on a collarless jig head with a dab of super glue. Yes, they are fragile, but they work just about anywhere/time/and species.....personal favorite is a 5.8inch fat in bluegill flash.
abkeenan Posted December 23, 2015 Posted December 23, 2015 War Eagle, Most of the guys that I have seen throwing A-Rigs are using lighter wire hooks on a ball or darter jig head. Reason being that if/when you snag you are going to be able to pull it free and get the whole rig back with one straightened out hook. People get real fancy with painted jig heads that look real purdy but I don't think it makes any difference. Unpainted heads are cheaper and just as effective IMO. Can't go wrong with any 3-5" baits in shad patterns (white, smoke, silver flake, etc). I have uncles on Bull Shoals that do very well running 3 and 4" grubs as trailers. I know lots of guys like the Keitech Swing Impacts that are a boot tail ribbed body swimmer but those are pretty costly. Lots of guys also run ZOOM swimming flukes. I fish in Missouri 90% of the time thus you are only allowed 3 hooks so I throw a rig with 3 arms and 3 willow blades on those arms. I get them off Ebay (KC School'em is the name) for dirt cheap (about 4 or 5 bucks a rig) compared to others on the market. I load mine with 3 of the Storm Wild Eye Shad's in 3 or 4" which come pre-rigged with a hook that is pretty stout. I throw it on 20lb InvisX fluoro and have no problems pulling it off snags. Looks good in the water and if you lose one you are out about $8-10 bucks which is a lot better than some guys that have $30 invested on their umbrella rig. You WILL lose these eventually. MOsmallies Posted December 23, 2015 Posted December 23, 2015 Good advice from abkeenan... I just prefer the 5 armed rigs because they seem more balanced to me. The times I have thrown 3 armed versions they seem to spin a little on the retrieve.. So I just run dummy baits on the top two wires. Just my preference... But abkeenan is saving a lot more money and heartache. Try some options you see here and pick the one you like best.
wareaglecamo Posted December 23, 2015 Author Posted December 23, 2015 MOsmallies, abkeenan, mjk86 . . . Wow! What an incredible wealth of information! Thank you so much for taking the time to respond and the "detail" of your information . . . a great help to me:-)
*T* Posted December 23, 2015 Posted December 23, 2015 OK, this is top-secret. As an alternative, try this with a single 4 - 5" Keitech attached. Now don't tell anyone. "Water is the driving force of all Nature." -Leonardo da Vinci

In the end that is what it is all about...working for YOU. MOsmallies 1
dtrs5kprs Posted December 23, 2015 Posted December 23, 2015 Super premium hooks will often result in the bass whisk getting permanently attached to wood. Think we all figured that out the hard way in year one. With a big rod and braid, you really don't even need a needlepoint hook. When I bother with it at all, I run 1/8oz shakey heads or an HP tube hook with clips, and TX rig a swimming fluke Jr or zman diesel minnowz. Ham and Champ188 2
merc1997 Bo Posted December 23, 2015 Posted December 23, 2015 i run a premium jig with the best hooks on the market, and can fish it all day long without hanging up, and get better hook ups. perhaps there is a better way of rigging an a-rig other than with limber hooks that will loose bass. just my opinion and observations. bo
