I'm somewhat guilty of buying higher end rods. I'm trying to get everything down to Falcon and Loomis rods when I can afford them. My main reason is warranty and quality of build. It's nice hearing about people doing well on lower end stuff. It puts things in perspective.

Thumbs------ If you can afford it I would not care what anyone bought or used. What worries me is those who should not be doing that because they have other priorities that they out on the back burner. Like I said I have seen it on at least 3 occasions where that kind of thing destroyed  a home and family. I use Cherrywood rods because they are very light and it came  to the point where I could no longer deal with the weight of  my old ugly stiks. I made the conversion about 2 yrs ago and have not had a problem with the 7 of them I own. If I do break one i can get another for $25 or less. At my age I do not need anything that will last me a lifetime. I see some postings on here about those expensive rods breking. I have no doubt it is 99 percent improper use. But still myself I jut cnnot be sure quality is quality in anything anymore.

I don't really fish high-end stuff.  I like Daiwa and Pflueger reels, and I've got a couple of Lew's reels that I think are great - but most of my "fishing poles" are BPS Bionic Blade series rods, dating from (I guess) 'way back when The Bionic Man show was popular on TV.  I used to wonder if attaching a Lew's reel to a BPS rod would cause some kind of explosion or something - but since Bass Pro is now carrying Lew's products, I guess not.  Didn't expect to ever see that happen.

I could fish with Zebco 33's and Ugly Stiks but they say you can't take it with you and believe me when I say there will not be enough left to take, lol. Middle of the road stuff is all I have ever had and I do alright...sometimes :)

I use to fish with zebco 808's and 404's and used some silstars  years ago...now im just getting back into freshwater fishing and have 2 - 7 foot medium ugly sticks 1 has an old quantum snap fire reel and the other has a new shimano sedona 2500 on it both spincast...have a couple off the wall rods reels also...it's tough when you on a fixed income.

I know everything about nothing and know nothing about everything!

What cracks me up is the guys who act like everyone who doesn't use Loomis or similar price point stuff can't fish.

I am so lucky to be able to choose what I want to fish with.  I have a few $30 spinning reels, and a few $130 spinning reels.  Also a few $25 homemade rods, and a few $150 higher end jobs I got on sale.  Not a huge difference in most of these items IMO.  Fishin's fishin.

OTOH, nothing wrong with a guy using high priced stuff if he can afford it.  Just don't put the rest of the world down for not using the latest and greatest...

Just back in from the show. Had a wonderful time talking fishing with Ned and others, and catching a couple of seminars. Saw a neat craw bait that will be coming from Fall Creek Lures. Probably a bed bait mostly. Might be out in March.

If you haven't checked Ned's blog at In Fisherman I highly recommend it. He has pics up of his gear in archived stories. It will make some folks fall straight over. Others will swear it is broken.

He made a point of emphasizing that high modulus rods increase sensitivity, which is a hindrance when you should be trying not to feel your bait.

While we're on the topic of old rods for ned rig, would an old light power do the trick? Or am I more suited with a m/l. I've never fished ned rig but I want to give it a shot after everything I've heard about it.

I would lean toward the ML. There are some L rods that will work, but they are either few and far between, or very situational. I am playing around with some UL and L sticks now, but that is because I want to ramp up the fun factor, not because I think they are better.

If you have a ML drop shot rod, that is a great place to start. You may end up adjusting later, but it will let you get the idea.

And be sure to read up on it, and above all else, slow down.
