Big Brown

Dan Boone, Stillwater, OK. caught and released this 25-inch brown this morning while fishing in the trophy area on Lake Taneycomo. He caught it on a white, 1/8-ounce jig, in very tough, windy conditions.

I think that there are more big browns in Taney than anyone actually knows. I'm just surprised more people don't catch them. I know some real big ones come out every year but I think if someone spent enough time on a streamer or jerkbite game they might be able to get some figured out.

Great looking fish.  From what I can tell from the picture the water still seems a little high. Can you wade on the banks yet?

Lake level has been about 904 feet, 3 feet high.  You can barely get a boat to the dam.  Water isn't high at all.

Saw ppl wading yesterday below the dam and catching fish.  I think I'd prefer this to no water at all actually- but that's me.

Beautiful fish! I caught a 12.6# brown in 1991 in that very same spot! Back in those days it was a pound off the state record.

I really have been tossing around the idea of a trying a rainbow trout colored swimbait this summer.  maybe a 6 to 8 inch one, thinking the bluffs across from lilleys or even lower taney.  I have zero doubt in my mind the monster browns, say 15 pounds and over eat small rainbows.

It would work! We used to catch em on suspending rouges alot on the upper end. You better hang on if you do it down on the lower end your liable to pull up a "big mouth green trout" about 10#.. they are there! I had on up to my boat that was north of 10# about 15 years ago.

I honestly think there's more browns - big browns down lake - down past Branson, than up here.  Going by fishing reports the last month.
