Smallie X spot hybrids (for some reason I hate calling them meanmouths) are pretty common anywhere that the spotted bass weren't native and the smallmouth did not evolve to coexist with spotted bass.  They seem to be far less common in rivers where both spots and smallies are native.  In fact, I can't remember ever catching one out of the south-flowing MO Ozark streams (even the St. Francis, where both species live in the exact same waters in nearly equal numbers), but I catch them regularly in the Meramec and Big, and also in the small tributaries running directly into the Mississippi (Joachim, Establishment, Saline).  My brother has the record for the biggest one caught out of one of my boats/canoes--a 19 incher from Big River above St. Francois Park.

A lot of people have no idea what they are. I showed that spot to a guy I know on the river yesterday and he almost freaked on me  first off he thought bass season was closed. Then he had no idea what a spot was!!!  He was fishing with a rooster tail so that kinda says it all.  I think I knew what a spot was when I was 10 years old.  I catch more mean mouths below rate 66 than anywhere

I run into a lot of people who don't know what a spot is either...looks close enough to a largemouth so that's what they think it is I guess. I've never caught a mean mouth but have seen a few guys post pictures of them on here. I believe one of the best pictures of one I've seen on here was from a table rock lake report.

I got out for a 2 hour tour yesterday evening.  Couple 17's and at least 5 keepers in the 14 to 15" range. All in one spot   Never moved the boat more than 20'

I fished all day yesterday, probably downstream from you, and it was slow but steady for me...a couple dozen fish, a 17 and an 18.  Didn't get a picture of the 18 incher because it inhaled a crankbait down into its gills, and by the time I extricated the bait I didn't want to hold it out of the water any longer.

I ran from Redhorse to below caverns. I didn't see but 2 boats. They weren't gonna catch any fish though.  Where'd you put in ?
