Hunter75 Posted February 26, 2016 Posted February 26, 2016 my grandfather gave me some of his tackle he doesn't use anymore and i found several spooks. the bodies are all intact and paint is still in good shape but the hooks are shot. Looking to replace them but not sure what hooks brand/size/color etc to use. With all the modifications I have read about on Redfins i figured you guys would know best on the spooks. Thanks.
mjk86 Posted February 26, 2016 Posted February 26, 2016 No modifications required...those will kill em. Get some gammy round bend or death traps. I typically will put 1 size larger treble hooks than what come on them, size 2 or 4 usually. If your feeling fancy you can dress the treble as I feel it gets more bites. It's amazing to me how many fish a plastic turd will catch.
mjk86 Posted February 26, 2016 Posted February 26, 2016 Also....depending on how old those are you may have some unique baits. I have a few old spooks and they all have different line tie positions and general construction. Not they they are necessarily any better than new ones, they just walk different.
abkeenan Posted February 26, 2016 Posted February 26, 2016 I would recommend removing the old hooks and then adding a split ring to their hook harness first. Then I would put one of 3 hooks options on them: Gammy round bend, Owner Stinger ST 36 or Daiichi Death Traps. All in size 2. Edit: Oh and I believe (not sure) I use size 3 split rings on mine. magicwormman, Champ188 and mixermarkb 3

176champion Posted February 26, 2016 Posted February 26, 2016 Use to fish them on the flats(saltwater) in Florida for catching trout, we would put a dude( small jig)on the back of it for a trailer, they where very productive. I have an old one on my boat key for a key floater the hooks have rusted off and the screws are rusted out. Hunter75 Posted March 3, 2016 Author Posted March 3, 2016 Thanks all. I checked them out and they arent old enough to be worth anything except catching fish. Appreciate all the recommendations.
Champ188 Posted March 3, 2016 Posted March 3, 2016 In that case, dress em up, tie em on and put em to work! trythisonemv 1
