Crazy good fishing on the Maramec right now. And here I thought it was practically dead and full of spots.

What a difference a few months make.

From years of massive Spot invasion and slaughterhouse gigging to absolute utopia. Maybe the MDC ain't so dumb after all.

It has seemed to me that Meramec fish tend to stay in pods in certain specific spots a lot more than on many other rivers.  Even in the summer when they are all up and down most rivers, you'll go a long way between productive spots for good fish on the Meramec.  The little ones scatter out but the bigger ones seem to hang together.  Even when they spawn, the bigger fish spawn on a few limited banks.  So if you are dialed into the spots where they are NOW, you can catch them, but the average Joe that doesn't know the spots or the pattern might not find them.  I fish it quite a bit but not nearly enough to keep abreast of where they are at any given point other than in the winter.  I've had quite a few meager trips this time of year when I didn't figure out the transitional patterns.

This year seems to be much different than previous Springs....Especially last year which sucked horribly

Needless to say I am on some pretty good pods of big fish.  Some of my spots have gone empty after the last flood. Those fish moved up and scattered on rocky banks. Other spots just started.  In the next 3 weeks I expect more and more fish then it will get not so good because they will be in spawn locations.  Not my favorite time to fish.   Oh well.  I'm thoroughly enjoying catching some quality fish and numbers through the roof. On my quest for a true giant.

Almost no gigging  on the Meramec  this Winter is the biggest  factor to the good fishing  right now. The MDC had nothing to do with it.....Mother nature hosed the rivers as far as water clarity  goes and the giggers were left almost nothing :)

Spot on.  I seen 4 boats all year gigging.  They had poor conditions. I really don't care what anyone thinks or says   I've lived on the river for most my 43 years and have seen a truckload of stuck bass over the years  gigging sucks for gamefish.   Period.  How can anyone argue continuously over a mute point?   Moving on. Back to the fishing.

Ehh it's just after years and years of hearing nothing but the most dire extremes about the smallmouth in this water and then bang, one bad winter for giggers and its magicaly fixed. That is some hellacious growth rates I guess.

I also think a bunch of these fish have been relocated by the flood in December.
