Members swelbo1 Posted March 15, 2016 Members Posted March 15, 2016 Sorry I was late to the party, but, if you haven't check out the Kistler Carbon Steel rods, they are very good rods with a good warranty and built in the US. The price point is very affordable for a very nice rod.
abkeenan Posted March 15, 2016 Posted March 15, 2016 For $99 that Lew's setup is gonna be nearly impossible to beat. Especially for a starter combo for someone new to baitcaster reels. We didn't know your budget so it was hard to dial you in but looks like you made out well for just a Benjamin.
Longball22 Posted March 15, 2016 Posted March 15, 2016 Agreed, that Cabela's setup is the deal. The Laser MG combos are not bad at all. I have both, but if you can spend a few extra bucks and move up to the MSB "MultiSet Brake" from the MCS "MagneticCastingSystem", you're doing yourself a favor. I personally believe having that centrifugal brake alongside the magnetic is hard to beat, particularly for training a beginner. My buddy had never had a baitcaster in his hand before last summer. I set him up with a BPS Pro Qualifier, and in a day we had him eased off the brakes and making pretty good casts, with minimal backlashes. In regards to Lew's reels, I picked three of these in the 300 size up at Sportsman's last year, and absolutely love them: http://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Lews_Tournament_Pro_HP_Spinning_Reel/descpage-LT.html I really like that wide spool for fluoro, as Dave mentioned above. Sorry to hear others had issues with them. I also have three or four older Quantum Accurist reels, and two of them get heavy use without flinching. The titanium bail wires were a nice touch on those.

Thanks again for the help ABK - glad to hear everyone thinks it will be a good set up for me. It arrives tomorrow!
Unimog Posted March 15, 2016 Posted March 15, 2016 Once i got proficient with a baitcaster I didn't want to deal with spinning tackle anymore. It gets old dealing with line twist and bait casters are good enough now to throw things typically though of as spinning tackle finesse techniques.
176champion Posted March 15, 2016 Posted March 15, 2016 The place where i ordered mine from was out of them and on back order could take 12 weeks to get one maybe....so i canceled and went to cabelas and ordered that one..the same one bassblind ordered. Amazon was also out of the one i had ordered, the white pole one. I know everything about nothing and know nothing about everything! Bruce Philips
Members BassBlind Posted March 15, 2016 Members Posted March 15, 2016 Good stuff 176 - my original email stated that I would receive the rod/reel on March 22nd, but just checked tracking and it is due for arrival tomorrow at my house. Hopefully they will get yours shipped out quickly as well.
176champion Posted March 15, 2016 Posted March 15, 2016 I think my said March 23 so we shall see, i haven't received an order shipped yet email. I know everything about nothing and know nothing about everything! Bruce Philips

While I somewhat agree, there are certainly times where a baitcaster just isn't the right tool for the job and the spinning gear is a better play. Casting lighter stuff, dealing with wind and having lighter line spooled up really can't be done as effectively with a baitcaster.
