5bites Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 I don't have much of a report really. I forced the sight fishing thing and didn't vary much from it. I fished fro Roaring River to Devils Dive area. I honestly don't know if the area is is in the beginning or end of the spawn. I saw a few empty beds but not like they all moved up at once and are done. Their were quit a bit more beds in the RR area. It was strange how one cove would have several beds and others would have zero. Typically I usually see several beds wherever I go this time of year. This is what has me confused on what stage the area is in. They could just be more spread out this year. I will say last year the first weekend of May beds were everywhere and we hammered them off beds with jerkbaits. My report is in here from last year. This year it was jig or paca slim. We caught several keepers but no big fish. I saw some solid fish cruising though which again has me wondering if I wasn't ahead of the bigger wave to come??? That and it's a few weeks earlier than lasts years big wave. I'm hoping this is the case so maybe I can get another weekend of sight fishing in. I enjoy it about as much as any technique. I caught some fish cranking and jerkbaiting while looking for beds. One I lost would have easily been the biggest fish of the weekend on a super special risto rap (that later got donated to the cause darn it!). Also caught a nice walleye that's in the fridge right now. Also there are fish to be had that you can't see just pitching to the bushes. Some are solid keepers that are very aggressive that seem to appear out of nowhere. All in all it was a great weekend to finally get back down there with the family. The weather was gorgeous, boat ran great, cabin was still there, plus we caught a few fish to boot. God is good. magicwormman, Muddy Water, Quillback and 2 others 5
Members BearFisher10 Posted April 25, 2016 Members Posted April 25, 2016 I was just about to post a thread about the same subject. I was confused as well but I moved back out to the transition areas this week and got on them pretty good for the little time I got to get out this week. Take a look at Bo's reports. He's giving away some solid info. I'm pretty sure we haven't seen a good chunk of them up spawning yet. I'm catching too many fish with no signs of spawning activity. I've been able to catch fish back in the creeks with a good one here or there but the majority are not that far back yet. I got on the brush deal today myself. I decided to try just for fun and caught a couple good ones doing that as well. Earlier in the week I was even getting them on a frog fishing the bushes. Quillback and Muddy Water 2
5bites Posted April 25, 2016 Author Posted April 25, 2016 I agree. I don't doubt that had I went to channel swings in the areas I was at and slowed down I could have found a better quality. I'm a sucker for sight fishing though. I came down with that on my mind and was gonna stick to it. Your post about the frog is why I had one on my deck all weekend. I only got to use it once though when I was curious how this one particular fish would react to it.
rps Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 Some years ago Biil Babler posted a reply to one of my posts. In that reply he pointed out that May was really the spawn month for TR. I don't think anyone has every gone far wrong relying on Bill's information. BTW - 5bites, I have a new boat ordered. This summer you need to come fish out of it too.
5bites Posted April 27, 2016 Author Posted April 27, 2016 I saw that! Congrats sir! Did my bad luck ruin the old boat so bad that you had to sell it? I reeeeeally hope we can make another cabin trip in the next few weeks to see if they move in better.

I was talking with the beautiful wife about how the trolling motor (Terrova 80 lb.) caused me to bend and push a button while dead lifting the unit with the other arm. (MinnKota needs to rethink its demographics versus its human design) In addition, since the shoulder surgery, she has been leary of the tiller boat. That transformed into a "You need a new boat" moment. She really is the most lovely wife a man could ask to have. As a result we ordered the second "last boat I'll ever buy." As for bad luck, the new buyer will inherit good karma deluxe. I haven't kept a bass caught in that boat in 6 years - even when I tagged the 8 pound largemouth. Only legal limits of walleye ever went home with me. I rescued/towed numerous folks, and I supervised a school outing in which the students built boats from cardboard and duct tape. You can't buy karma like that - unless you buy my boat. The new boat is promised for early June. Message me before one of your summer trips. Champ188, magicwormman and 5bites 3
Champ188 Posted April 27, 2016 Posted April 27, 2016 Congrats on the new rig, rps. Look forward to seeing pics.

Hopefully this time the lake won't be 10' over and rising 1'+ a day. Some lessons in stable conditions would be great.
