Members govslug Posted June 13, 2016 Members Posted June 13, 2016 I am relatively new to boating in the river . Have only been out in our new boat 3 or 4 times . We put in at rim shoals . So far we have been out with minimum flow and 4 generators . We have always gone up river and fished down . Would like to go down river to crooked creek area and fish there . Below the catch and release . What do I need to watch for , is it doable with min. flow ? Do I need to hug a certain bank...ect....ect.... Any info would be greatly appreciated....Thanks
Ham Posted June 13, 2016 Posted June 13, 2016 The river constantly changes with high flow events. Free fall in and hang somewhere and gravel moves around. I'll never make a blanket statement about how to run this spot or that spot. I run a jet. I can run really shallow without destroying props or trashing a lower unit, but big rocks ruin my hull just the same as they would a prop boat. I would not expect to make it back up from CC to Rim at minimum flow. It might be that you can, but I won't try it. I'd prefer 2000 CFS to do it, but likely it could be done at less. I understand the desire for information, but you really need to put your time in and learn for yourself. There are good trout all up and down the river. Go make a few trips from each and every access point at various water levels. Take notes so you can pick your poison before starting a trip. Good Luck. Catch a bunch, but stay safe. snagged in outlet 3 Posted June 13, 2016 Posted June 13, 2016 Ask Gary at Rim Shoals Trout Dock. I didn't think going downstream was possible on zero generation but that was before min flow.
Ham Posted June 13, 2016 Posted June 13, 2016 I'd bet it's a lot easier going downstream than back up. Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. On Instagram @hamneedstofish
Greasy B Posted June 13, 2016 Posted June 13, 2016 You could drift down easy enough and could probibly drag a prop boat back up from the second island but it would be real tough to drag back up if you went below the third island. Years ago there was a gravel flat between White House and crooked creek that was only inches deep, I'm not sure what min flow would give you but it wouldn't be much more. A float between rim and ranchette would be best, it's a long shuttle but you'd get to fish shoe string shoal. rps 1 His father touches the Claw in spite of Kevin's warnings and breaks two legs just as a thunderstorm tears the house apart. Lshack2 Posted June 19, 2016 Posted June 19, 2016 How difficult is it to run from the lower portion of the Rim catch and release back to the boat ramp on minimum flow? I know a lot of gravel filled in on the river right side of the first island.... thanks "All first-class fishermen on the Sea of Galilee were fly fishermen and that Apostle John, the favorite, was a dry fly fisherman..."Norman MacLean
