fishinwrench Posted June 25, 2016 Posted June 25, 2016 The prism chromey finishes have always been good for me on "spooks" but I hate that the finish isn't very durable. When they start looking really ragged then I scrape it off and the result is a bone color that after awhile takes on a greenish yellow stain from the water, which seems to work great when the prism-chromey color doesn't. My absolute favorite is the Heddon Super Spook, or Super Spook jr. even though it's shape is boring, it's the motion that draws the strikes, and if you're working it right the fish never really get a good look at it anyway, so IMO the shape really doesn't matter. My hookup ratio and casting accuracy with the banana shaped baits kinda seems less, but that may just be in my head.
Al Agnew Posted June 25, 2016 Author Posted June 25, 2016 Yeah, Wrench, I had a SS Jr. with the chrome finish that I'd never used with that chrome finish, and decided to see if it would work with three hooks on it. Spent a half hour on it installing the three hooks, took it out to the pond and tried it. It worked very well. Spent another ten minutes replacing the rear treble with a feathered treble to see if it would still walk. It did. I'm liking the looks of it. Started out fishing it on my next trip, caught some fish on it pretty quickly, so kept fishing it all day. By the end of the day about half the chrome was gone. And this one wasn't bone colored underneath, it was clear. Which made it really look bad with huge patches of the chrome gone.
joeD Posted June 25, 2016 Posted June 25, 2016 Person A has a Zebco 33 with a beetle spin and fishes once or twice a week all summer long on a few different streams. Person B has "better equipment" and the latest top water lures. Fishes the same streams as person A, but only a few times all summer. Who would you rather be, person A or person B?
Hog Wally Posted June 25, 2016 Posted June 25, 2016 I've always liked the spook on the river but when I started hybrid fishing years ago I quickly learned bone and white were the ticket
cnr Posted June 25, 2016 Posted June 25, 2016 Person B and sneak out to fish more when my wife thinks I'm working. Or, maybe person A and buy better equipment but hide the tackle warehouse bill from my wife. Unfortunately I fall into both personas. Mitch f 1
Hog Wally Posted June 25, 2016 Posted June 25, 2016 The last 2 big fish I caught were on dog baits on river. Both were after it pretty hard I turned my head to resist premature hook set and just kept walking until I felt the rod load up. Trick I learned on hybrids. I almost always look away when a hybrid is blowing up on it. If I don't I usually set the freaking hook and it's hanging off whoever is in the boat with me. Mitch f 1
fishinwrench Posted June 25, 2016 Posted June 25, 2016 The rod is pointed down when fishing a Spook, so a brisk sweep to the side gets the hooks set good without launching the bait airborne if he doesn't get stuck. The whole "waiting to feel the weight of the fish" before swinging just doesn't work for me. I don't possess that degree of self control after a topwater explosion. Gavin, Mitch f and Hog Wally 3
Hog Wally Posted June 25, 2016 Posted June 25, 2016 Wrench, you ever gonna be over this way ? It's about time we go fishing
Gavin Posted June 25, 2016 Posted June 25, 2016 Who cares Joe? We are who we are and fish when we can. We all obsess about fishing lures and gizmos but it is good to hear about what others like. Probably have...25-30 walking baits.....use 4-5 regularly. Coosa and Hog Wally 2
Hog Wally Posted June 25, 2016 Posted June 25, 2016 I love dog baits. Especially on or near current seams
