Ham Posted July 1, 2016 Posted July 1, 2016 The recent change in pool level for Bull Shoals makes water in the bushes a full time proposition. I believe flipping jigs or soft plastics into the bushes for these fish will be a good option. I want to acquire a good combo for flipping and pitching. I have a bunch of MH rods already and it may be that I have a good fishing rod at the house already. I use to make do with others. I imagine some of the time I will be using fluro/ co-poly, but some of the time I will be using braid. I would imagine I want the rod to be at least 7 foot long. I would also imagine I want a higher speed reel. I'm looking for persuasive arguments for rod length/ action. I little slower rod might pitch a little better. I'm hoping to get some very specific reel recommendations as well. Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. On Instagram @hamneedstofish
dtrs5kprs Posted July 3, 2016 Posted July 3, 2016 7' MH/H. I'm using a St Croix Legend Elite, an old Chronarch, and FC or big mono. You don't want braid anywhere near buck bushes. That's for big jigs and thick plastics. Have some old 6'8" all stars I'd use for tubes or smaller jigs.
Ham Posted July 3, 2016 Author Posted July 3, 2016 well heck. I have several rods at the crib that meet that category already. Braid will come in handy around grass. I rarely get to fish places with grass, but I do. I was think something a little less than XF to help the rod load and pitch a little better. I would think with the braid punching set ups you would want a more moderate rod speed. I will want a new reel. maybe a beefy daiwa or shimano is in my future down the line. 17 lb fluro or 20 lb co-poly for the first go round of playing. WeekendWarrior Posted July 4, 2016 Posted July 4, 2016 My choice would be the loomis mbr844 glx with a old chronarch 50 mg
fishinwrench Posted July 4, 2016 Posted July 4, 2016 For some guys only the finest will do, but in my opinion (and flippin'/pitchin' is what I do more than anything) a high modulus, expensive rod is both unnecessary and unwanted for short line, heavy cover stuff. As long as the rod is not overly tip heavy, has plenty of backbone, and is built tough, it will do perfectly. The last thing I want when fishing in tight heavy cover is a rod that I can't be mean to.

Yes it is definitely one of the finest setups and is a great flippin/pitchin and skipping setup along with being one of the finest all around jig rods made. I would not pay full price for it nor did I but any more with 60-70K bassboats and 600-1000k rod/reel combos seems to be the norm. Have loomis rods from when you break it and go to store and get a new replacement for free but that does not happen any more which made the high dollar purchase worth it back then.
dtrs5kprs Posted July 7, 2016 Posted July 7, 2016 Overall weight is the biggest factor for me, after how it fishes.
Fish24/7 Posted July 10, 2016 Posted July 10, 2016 for pitching this is a sweet lightweight combo Quantum Energy E100SPTA..BX3 /Fenwick Elite Tech Bass Casting Rod 6'9" Med Hvy.
Fish24/7 Posted July 10, 2016 Posted July 10, 2016 for flipping I use those Quantum Hackney and Klein rods paired with Ardent Apex Elite reels. idk if they still make the rods???
