Haris122 Posted July 8, 2016 Posted July 8, 2016 So yesterday me and one of my fishing buddies made it out to Perry County Community Lake, and caught a few fish. Thing is everything we caught was near shore and for my catches, unimpressive, and the lake is supposed to have Striped/White hybrids (Wipers) in it too; So, since I'm assuming those dwell mainly in the deeper spots away from shore, and also just in general to increase my skill fishing the lake proper, and not just have the vast majority of my successful fishing be beating the bank, I was wondering what some good habits/techniques are for fishing deep, open water away from the shoreline, and which species are more likely to be caught fishing there than close to the bank. Right now my deep water fishing is usually restricted to trolling a shallow to medium diving crankbait as I'm moving between spots close to shore or prominent structure, but usually there isn't much rhyme or reason to it, and I rarely use much else.
fishinwrench Posted July 8, 2016 Posted July 8, 2016 I'm probably one of the worst "deep open water" fishermen here, but if you simply move out over water that is a couple long casts away from good shoreline areas you can sometimes find suspended fish that will bite. Big Spooks, Spinnerbaits, swimbaits. I don't try to "get to the fishes level", instead I just try to just get close enough that the few semi-active ones will chase. It might help to kick out a marker bouy when you catch one, and then try different baits and presentations in that general area.
Haris122 Posted July 8, 2016 Author Posted July 8, 2016 Wrench, just so I don't misinterpret "get to the fishes level", what do you mean by that?
fishinwrench Posted July 9, 2016 Posted July 9, 2016 Attempting to determine what depth they are suspended at. Then choosing a bait that will either run at that level or can be counted down. I don't try, nor care. I may throw a big super Spook a bit, then slow roll a Spinnerbait down about 5-6ft., and if they don't bite either right away I don't try any harder. It always seems that if I can get one then I can usually get 3-5 before they stop eating what I'm throwing. Someone better at it could probably make some adjustments and load the boat.
Old plug Posted July 9, 2016 Posted July 9, 2016 If you are talking bass. I have a way of catch them with plastics a lot like wrench is discribing. I have a favored place that is a deep channel bank. In the summer bass suspend out there at 20ft or more most of the time. But in mid evening they will rise and feed on shad that are in mid depth schools. You would never know they were doing it unless you catch them at it on a depth finder. Find a place like that and patrol it with a depth finder. If you see them rising throw a slow sinking plastic worm out there and just let it sink. It is also important to get there at the right time since the feed may not last a long time. You might find places like this anytime however by just watching the depth finder for the classic large fish pattern under smaller fish. Mitch f 1
Spoon Feeder Posted July 9, 2016 Posted July 9, 2016 Because of the hot weather the fish are moving deep earlier than usual. The best way to get them deep is using jigging spoons like Bink's Spoons. We have videos at binkspoons.com to show you how to catch these fish when they go deep. dan hufferd and Mitch f 2
Haris122 Posted July 9, 2016 Author Posted July 9, 2016 Where do you go for the videos Spoon feeder? Wrench and Old Plug, thanks for the pointers. I need to really start spending more time fishing further out. With as much lake proper as there is compared to area near shoreline, it seems like a must have skill if you want to fish for white bass, stripers, and such.
Spoon Feeder Posted July 9, 2016 Posted July 9, 2016 Go to www.binkspoons.com and scroll down. On the left there is a link to youtube videos or here is the link. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCrkP6V2d_SRSCH-XXtOSVbA/videos Make sure you check out the video "Horizontal Jigging with Bink's Spoons". There is a lot of information on both vertical and horizontal jigging in that video.
Old plug Posted July 9, 2016 Posted July 9, 2016 Just what are you fishing for spoon feeder ?????? Fish or rishermen.
