Members BIG K Posted July 17, 2016 Members Posted July 17, 2016 If you were going to buy a fly rod to strictly midge fish and nothing else what length and wieght would you buy i am constantly changing tippets leaders etc to go from midges to hoppers to micro jig and float and looking to expand my rod selection
podum Posted July 17, 2016 Posted July 17, 2016 8'6" 4 wt. Medium fast because im turning over an indicator most times. I wish I had more time more than I wish I had more money.
Members bgault Posted July 17, 2016 Members Posted July 17, 2016 I fish almost exclusively midges (with a fly rod) ... and use a 9' 5wt ... caught this nice bow on a #18 zebra midge a few weeks ago ... laker67 and trythisonemv 2
Russell Doughty Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 10' for ease of mending, 3 wt for enjoying the fight.
Gavin Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 Depends on were you fish. Think a 10' 4wt would be nice on a tail water, maybe a tenkara rod on a small creek.
stlfisher Posted July 19, 2016 Posted July 19, 2016 IMO any 3,4, or 5 weight will do nicely. Judging from your post it is not so much the rod, but rather setting up your rod for different fishing situations that is becoming a bit aggravating. If it is strictly fishing small midges under an indicator then a 9-10 foot rod with a double tapered line should make for some easy role casting and mending. medium fast action should be fine. Fast action takes a bit getting used to with small tippets.
Ham Posted July 19, 2016 Posted July 19, 2016 Probably a 9 foot 4 weight. Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. On Instagram @hamneedstofish
jtram Posted July 19, 2016 Posted July 19, 2016 I like throwing midges with a custom build 8 ft 5 wt but you can't beat a good 9 ft 6 wt on tailwaters....... the can do it all very well. Never know when you will want to throw some lead on and get deep or tie on a t-sculpin for giggles.
