I have now been to Norfork 2x, and I have struggled both times only to hit the White and have great success. This last weekend i spent a couple of hours before dark fishing below the dam. I picked up 2 brookies in my first 5 drifts and thought it was on. Both came on a #20 wd-40 fished below a #20 zebra (cant remember the color) 6x fluorocarbon. I didnt catch another fish over the next couple hours. Fish were very obviosly midging everywhere, i tried shallower, deeper, color changes, #18's, #20's, a freaking egg pattern for goodness sakes! Should i have gone smaller, bigger, or would 7x have solved my troubles?????? Midge fishing isnt hard but that tailwater got me.....

Did you try swinging or stripping a soft hackle in front of them? Hatchery rainbows get all stupid over a wet fly swing. If I'm in front of midging trout that won't bite I look for different fish rather than trying to out smart them.

The thought did cross my mind, but i was too stubborn to quit trying to force feed them. The most frustrating part was the only other 2 guys fly fishing were hooking up fairly consistently...... something under an indi

It should have been easy, but then again I should have tied on a red butt

Man, I think I would have asked them what they were using. Typically, the answer on Norfork is go smaller than what you would use on the White, but it seems like you were using small enough stuff.

I'm better with a Zig Jig.

Ya i was fishing #12 & #14's on the white and caught the crap out of them. The only thing that I can think is maybe i should have tried 7x, but 6x should have been fine....... Just aggravated that they were so obviously midging, a situation that I love to find because it is one of the easiest games in fly fishing most of the time. Oh well, I will just have to go back and try it again.

I never fish below 6x for trout.
