moguy1973 Posted November 18, 2016 Posted November 18, 2016 Anyone know where I can pick up a filter, oil and lube for my Mercury 60 hp 4 stroke in St Louis? -- JimIf people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles. -- Doug Larson
Gavin Posted November 18, 2016 Posted November 18, 2016 Maybe the Fishing Hole on Watson, just east of Elm in Crestwood. Couple boat places down by Denny Dennis too. snagged in outlet 3 1
fishinwrench Posted November 20, 2016 Posted November 20, 2016 O'Rielly auto parts carries Sierra aftermarket filters and several brands of 10w30 (just pick one). The Sierra stuff is quite good, I use it alot and have never had any issues with any of it.

I was wondering about the Sierra stuff when I was looking online for filters, they were a lot better priced than the Merc ones. Does the oil have for marine applications or can I just use some good synthetic like Mobil1? Same for gear lube, can I just use a regular 80w90 or does it have to be something for outboards? -- JimIf people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles. -- Doug Larson
fishinwrench Posted November 20, 2016 Posted November 20, 2016 4-stroke oil is 4-stroke oil. Mercury will say that there is "special secret stuff" in their oil but that's marketing baloney. Motor oil doesn't get any better than Mobil 1 as far as I'm concerned. As for gear lube: The Marine grade gear lube is supposed to have additives that allow some water to emulsify, but if you have water in your gearcase then you need seals....not lube that will emulsify (meaning to HIDE) it. Water and lube (whether marine grade or otherwise) will seperate when things aren't moving, and you don't want the lowermost components of your gearcase sitting in water. So your call there. I use the Marine grade in my shop because I'm not the one paying for it and that's what my customers think they need. I don't get paid to debate the qualities of it. ☺ Daryk Campbell Sr 1
