Daryk Campbell Sr Posted November 27, 2016 Posted November 27, 2016 The battery question has been adressed a few times. Here is my twist. I have a 10 foot flat bottom Jon. I have a deep cycle 34 series and it's is very heavy. I do not trailer, and usually have to carry a decent distance. I have been toying with the idea of using a small deep cycle battery, about the size of a power sports battery. I have a 36lb thrust trolling motor. Maybe go out 4 hours on small streams. Any experience? This is probably going to be on my Xmas wish list. By the way. Money is just ink and paper, worthless until it switches hands, and worthless again until the next transaction. fishinwrench Posted November 27, 2016 Posted November 27, 2016 I'd get a group 27 deep cycle. Saw a cool and easy to fabricate wheel system for a small jon boat once, made the trek to the waters edge a breeze, and the battery can just ride in the boat. It just strapped on with a ratchet strap.
Ketchup Posted November 28, 2016 Posted November 28, 2016 Like Wrench said, I would build a simple mod. that would allow you to easily pull the boat, with gear, down to the water. With something like the one I pictured, you can move it forward for easier weight transfer. Good luck Daryk Daryk Campbell Sr 1 TinBoats BassClub. An aluminum only bass club. Daryk Campbell Sr Posted November 28, 2016 Author Posted November 28, 2016 I have actually already made a dolly/ trailer and it works out okay. Needs bigger wheels. Probably need something like a deer cart. My other problem is weight. Myself and kids just get a little uncomfortable for the small boat. I bought the Gheenoe to make it easier, now we have two and I am sure it will. Just trying to make it easier to get to a couple ponds that are not walk-in friendly. Might as well just deal. I also don't believe that I use half of the capacity of a large battery. Oh well, I ask, you answer, now to do the right thing. ;-) Money is just ink and paper, worthless until it switches hands, and worthless again until the next transaction. fishinwrench Posted November 28, 2016 Posted November 28, 2016 It's best to not run a battery below 50% charge on purpose. As voltage drops heat begins to build up in the circuits. A trolling motor that is run quite a bit on a low battery will glaze over the brushes and lose efficiency, bushings swell and contract, seals will get hot and leak, ect.ect. Always better to have more battery than you actually need. Even your cell phone gets hot when the battery gets low. Ever notice that? Champ188 1
