Based on many statements from Don Weed in the BBC Merc forums, I am hesitant to burn premium in my Merc ProXS. Below is a statement from Don that I saved as a reminder to myself. I believe that Don tends to error on the side of caution but when one has an outboard approaching 16K in value, I guess so do I. However, I'm interested in others perspective on this. p.s. I've never tried to buy gas at Lilley's. Is it available at the street or dock? Higher octane fuels burn SLOWER and COOLER. When utilized in an engine not DESIGNED for high-octane, this results in an INCOMPLETE BURN of fuel (and essentially, a richer operating condition- which contributes to carbon buildup). Also, because the fuel burns SLOWER and COOLER, the BTU output is LOWER, and the power produced per unit of fuel is actually LOWER. This means "less performance". Great info! I normally use ethanol free regular from the local Marinas. In the offseason I really prefer to use the ethanol free premium, if I can't get the regular.

The Y store has plenty, but their pump is broken and have no idea when it will be repaired. Is there anywhere between here and Springfield that might have some good fuel? Thank You! 176champion Posted January 5, 2017 Posted January 5, 2017 I buy the 87 octane with ethanol and put quickleen and quickcare in it every time i put gas in, i mix my gas and oil also cause my oil pump been taken off and i like the extra smoke....lol stonerj111, magicwormman and Smalls21 3 I know everything about nothing and know nothing about everything! dtrs5kprs Posted January 5, 2017 Posted January 5, 2017 Depends on the XS. The old, old ones were high octane only. As in a certain '05 250XS. Also doesn't use Opti oil.
Old plug Posted January 5, 2017 Posted January 5, 2017 ethenol will seperates and sticks to rhe sides of the plastic gas tubing and other parts like bottom on fuel fulters. then later on it will chip etc and small pieces will go up and foul your whole fuel seystem. It will shock you howfast tat might happen. dtrs5kprs and magicwormman 2

I also use fully synthetic Mercury DFI oil (the brown stuff) and treat my fuel regularly with Mercury QuicKlean to combat carbon buildup. If you use ethanol-added fuels, be sure to treat every tank with Mercury QuickCare. I alternate between quickare and quickleen every time i fill up the tanks.
Dutch Posted January 5, 2017 Posted January 5, 2017 I ran QuicKleen in every tank for my old Opti along with 87 octane. It ran for 14 years and is still going as far as I know. I now have a 250 Verado and have been advised to use 91 octane, QuicKleen and QuickCare in every fill up. magicwormman 1

I contacted Scott Phelps today and he gave me the following info: Yes Ken. The pumps are on 7 days a week from 10am till 4pm at both marinas. Credit card only. Exception: last two days the pumps were off due to wind sometimes ice and snow conditions will force us to turn the pumps off as well. dtrs5kprs 1
