Got to the Oakland ramp around 9:00 AM and there were no other trailers there, which was not surprising since it was a weekday and there was a lake wind advisory.  Had a bumpy run to my starting spot, but I've ran in worse chop before.  Once I got there, I caught a short Smallmouth right away on a jerkbait, but then I couldn't buy a bite on one.  I was also having a hard time fishing a jerkbait with that much wind.  So, I decided to throw the a-rig around.  I ended up catching a short Largemouth and a fat keeper Spot on the rig, but the bites were few and far between.  I  got into an area that was somewhat sheltered from the wind, and I started throwing a football jig and it got bit.  I ended up catching 15 bass (7 Smallmouth, 6 Largemouth, and 2 Spots) and had 7 keepers (4 Smallmouth, 2 Spots, and 1 Largemouth) and the majority of those fish were on the football jig.  Big fish of the day was a Smallmouth that was 18 5/8".  Last time I fished out here, the majority of the bass I caught were on a jerkbait, but today I could hardly buy a bite on one.  I did notice on my graph that a lot less bass were suspended off the bottom, so I assumed they were hugging bottom and maybe that's why the jig was the deal.  I caught the majority of the bass around channel swing banks that had large rock and boulders.  Water temps ranged from 48 to 49 degrees. The wind laid down about an hour before dark, and the ride back to the ramp wasn't bad at all.

Yeah, I need to set a crayfish trap out there sometime to see them first hand and try and get the color patterns down.  I was  throwing a PB & J jig with a green pumpkin trailer and they were hitting it good...

Nice bunch of bass. Great job on a tough water day.

Yeah, Bulls Shoals has been fishing good lately...  I like that you can go down the bank and hook a bass and literally have no idea if it's a Largemouth, Smallmouth, Spotted Bass, or Meanmouth.... they're all in the same area at times....

I have not caught a mean mouth. Sounds like a place that I have to fish.  Does BSL also have Ozark bass? Sounds like a BSL Bass slam opportunity.

Yeah, let me know if you want to come down and fish BSL sometime.  I wouldn't say Meanmouth are common where I fish, but I've caught a couple.  There are Ozark Bass in BSL.  I wouldn't count them in a bass slam though since their genus is Ambloplites and not Micropterus...  You could have fun trying to get a Centrarchid multi-slam though, but that may be easier when the water is warmer....

I've fished BSL more than a little and I've NEVER caught an Ozark Bass in BSL. The creeks feeding BSL are full of Ozark Bass, but BSL itself is NOT full of Ozark Bass.

but FWIW, I don't think I've ever caught mean mouth at BSL either.

Wow I thought I was a bit of a species snob. What do you expect from a guy that goes by Micropterus :). I stand corrected sir! A centrachid multi-slam would be great. We'll have to talk about this again come the warmer weather. I would like to try to get a warmouth if they are available as part of that slam. Maybe throw in a percidae bonus fish would be interesting. I have seen photos and read reports of catches of Perca flavescens in BSL. They don't seem too common, so not expected to get one in the boat.

I've caught a bunch of Ozark Bass in the tribs as well, and I've caught them in the White River itself, so I figured it be safe to say there are at least some stragglers in BSL, especially if you get up the creek arms far enough or fish the upper end towards powersite.  I agree, there probably present in limited numbers.
