I'm new to the area and have a basstracker with a 40 HP and want to fish fellows and Springfield lake/ the James River. I know the hp restrictions in place but my question is on Springfield and the james river access by 65, can I use my boat if the motor is tilted up and or prop off and just using the trolling motor? I love river fishing but want to do it right. Also, is fellows decent in the winter for bass? Appreciate any info. Thanks

Welcome to Springfield!

Fellows Lake would be totally fine with your boat, Springfield Lake on the other hand is a no go. There are not any boat ramps anymore and I believe (don't quote me on this) that you're not allowed to have a gas motor of any kind. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news!

Good luck!

I think Lake Springfield is 5hp gas engine limit but you're right no real boat ramps anymore there.  Welcome to Springfield area!

It's not a must but if you want to do a lot of running on the James and not mess up your motor I would recommend a jet they aren't a must on the James as lots of prop boats are used but they are handy or a good kayak

Springfield lake is a 6hp limit, i used to take my boat with a 60 on it with the prop off and no one ever said anything, security even stopped and said it was fine as long as i dont use the big motor.  No ramp now, i really doubt they will put one back in.  It is over populated with kayaks anyhow
