moguy1973 Posted February 19, 2017 Posted February 19, 2017 Stay away from the small BPS ones. They are crap and I'm not sure how they can call them split ring pliers. Mitch f Posted February 19, 2017 Posted February 19, 2017 Forgive me for the crude sketch, but I've never been a fan of the kind of split ring plier mechanism on the right. The one on the left seems to work better. The Texas Tackle ones are very good. Bass Yakker 1 "Honor is a man's gift to himself" Rob Roy McGregor
rps Posted February 19, 2017 Posted February 19, 2017 I cannot find an example of the green foam handled pliers I use and love. They operate like the left side Mitch F drawing. I bought them about 12 or 15 years ago. Of course, I cannot remember where.

I've got a pair in the boat, one in the spare treble box, one in the spinnerbait parts box. http://m.ebay.com/itm/Xuron-Model-496-Split-Ring-Plier-/262171010727?hash=item3d0a9c26a7%3Ag%3AdNYAAOSwBLlVcJfK&_trkparms=pageci%3Ae1ca47db-f6e6-11e6-a19b-005056b676ff%7Cparentrq%3A582fe0f215a0a2abd3ff4a15fff394d1%7Ciid%3A3 definitely the best ones to get. bo dtrs5kprs 1

Difference between those and the cheaper kind, is the Xuron has a little groove to hold the ring. Lets you open just about any size ring. Sharper hooked jaw will split rings regardless of wire strength. With some smaller rings the longer pliers won't go far enough through the ring to open them. Just won't reach the upper hooked jaw.
