I am sure it has been hashed out here thousands of times, but what is an ideal ned setup?

I currently use my regular spinning gear. 6'6" -7" Med rod with 15-20 lb braid (6lb mono diameter equivalent) with a 10 lb fluoro leader.

I am wondering if my crappie setup would work. It is a 7" Light action with 15lb braid (6lb diameter equivalent) with same 10lb fluoro leader. Would the light action rod bee too flimsy for bass fishing?

First setup is overpowered, second is likely too light. Line is too heavy on both.

Think 6'6"-7'6" ML fast. Drop shot rod or walleye rod. Straight 6# fluorocarbon (or 7 if you run Sunline). If you want to run braid, drop that main line down to 8# or 10#, and run a long leader of 6# FC.

I do fish it on some "heavy crappie" type UL rods, but just when I want to play with them. You need some backbone to pop them, but rod still has to be soft enough to preserve the light line.

Something like a shakey head rod will generally be too crisp, provide too much feel. You don't want to feel it, and a little softer rod helps with that.

Absolute best off the shelf rod is the St Croix Eyecon walleye rod, either 6'6" or 7' ML. The 7'6" in that line doesn't feel right. Not a fan of Falcons for it, just an awful lot of rod for 6#, even on the 4 powers. Lew's makes several that will work.

thanks. I am aware my bass spinning setup is a bit too much and was afraid the light action was too little. Hoping to find what works best with something I already have. thanks for the help dtrs5kprs

If it was me, on Bull, I'd use the bass spinning rod, and get a spool of 6# fluorocarbon, and use that for a long leader at the very least, or preferbably wind a couple casts worth of that on. Water is clear, and with line that light I'm not a big fan of extra knots in the mix. I'm sure you will probably end up buying a dedicated Ned rod, because it's a bait that works that well, but the medium spinning rods will get ya through the weekend.

Spot on with the leader length. I know folks who throw the "recommended" 6' or so leaders.

Scares me stupid. I run some braid for special situations, mostly 8# Daiwa at the moment. With a 7'6" rod, I've got a good two today lengths of leader, plus a few turns on the spool. Maybe 20-25'?

Mostly to nudge Dave, I do things differently. I made a Ned casting rig and I run straight Maxima #5 line. The key reason was to get rid of line twist, but it also reminded me you have better feel on casting rigs.

I also based mine on Daves reccomendations and had fully intended to buy a St. CRoix Eyecon, But BPS didn't have one in stock to handle and feel and I don't buy a new/different rod I can't handle before hand.  So I ended up with a St Croix 6'6" medium light fast action rod they did have, paired it with the Pfleuger reel, 30 size but memory is hazy on that.  Haven't done squat with it as far as Ned fishing, but it has turned into a fabulous walleye jig rod and back up crappie rod.  Currently spooled with 8 lb. Powe Pro and a 6# P Line leader.  Of course I also bought  Whopper Plopper and have never even take it out of he box, think it might be in the creek box.
