Current River Fishing Report 6/16/2017

Kdan and I witnessed a brown of about 7lbs catch a 7 to 8 inch brown and swallow it head first. A short time later it caught a rainbow that was good size, maybe 13 to 14, but was unable to swallow it. What was most amazing to me was how he captured and killed them. It was a male brown and he would grab the fish sideways across the gill plates, let the smaller fish suffocate, turn him headfirst and start swallowing similar to how a snake does. We had a ringside seat in the c and r area.

I would love to catch thst brown. Largest on the Current was 5 lbs 4 oz. Rainbow trout rapala countdowns do pretty well. I would think that one of Billethead's shuttlecock flies in a rainbow trout pattern would work pretty well down there.

They don't get that big sipping bugs. It takes meat to feed a body of that size.

Last year after the flooding in the spring at Maramec Springs I watched a YUGE brown swimming by with half of a good size trout jutting out of his mouth. Don't take my comments as doom and gloom for the Current River trout fishery. In fact, I hope to see a rise in the number of larger trout caught (hopefully by me}. I have been fortunate to have returned to fly fishing for trout at a time when the misfortune of the state benefits my pastime. I am heading back to the Current to access the damage to the insect population tomorrow. I will inform you if the trout are leaving the water searching for terrestrials and small children to eat.

I wouldn't be too concerned. Those trout are spread all over the river. Some friends caught tons of trout and kept several limits of rainbows between Akers Ferry & Round Spring last weekend. Akers to Round is usually the worst fishing on the river (not stocked with trout, and too cold for good bass fishing), but it is fishing really well  for trout right now. Cedar to Akers should be on fire now too.

   With all of the springs that feed that river. I am sure trout are spread all through the river, just not caught enough to be noticed. I have seen pictures of a nice Bow taken below Round Springs. A three-pound football shaped sucker. 

 

 

This didn't Post correctly on my site. The Quote above is mine. I am sure the trout in the Current can find homes in the summer along this fine river. I have found spring seeps just wading the shoreline.
