Members mpark Posted July 19, 2017 Members Posted July 19, 2017 I have fished Stockton frequently for some years but have not tried trolling crank baits. I was wondering if any one would share there technique to get the lure down to the desired depth. It seems most of my baits only travel to about 8 feet and most fish seem to be deeper during these hot months. I have read a few articles on the subject but just wanted a method you prefer on Stockton. Any other advice on how to minimize crank bait hang ups while trolling would also be appreciated. dan hufferd Posted July 19, 2017 Posted July 19, 2017 Blue tiger #7 flicker shad or glass shad. 1.7 to 2 mph. Let a bunch of line out. 100ft or so. Cross over some point at 12 to 15 ft deep. That should get you fishing. Try new stuff and drive over different kinds of structure and brush. You can probably figure it out from there. Good luck ! P.S. buy a lure retiever, it will pay for it self pretty quick. Big Keene, 3Dfishes, ramman123 and 3 others 6
Big Keene Posted July 19, 2017 Posted July 19, 2017 most baits tend to hit their max depth with about 180ft of line out. we have been using depth hunter metered braid line, and it makes it easy to repeat what depth you are at. Dan Hufferd is right about the #7 blue tiger flicker shad, and the lure retriever. a 2 mph boat ride should put you on fish! good luck! blacknoseddace Posted July 19, 2017 Posted July 19, 2017 I started using 1/2 oz inline sinkers this year and I like them. I can use a variety of crankbaits that are smaller or don't dive deep enough without the help of added weight. The action of the crankbaits are not effected. I don't have to let out a lot of line either. If I slow it down, it goes deeper. I use my trolling motor and change speeds to experiment. I buy my sinkers from Netcraft. I think Bass Pro has them too. dan hufferd 1
