stlfisher Posted September 17, 2017 Posted September 17, 2017 After today I think you gotta fire Odom. You could say last year the mistakes were youth, but this team is extremely poorly coached and appears to regressed from last year. Lack of talent doesn't help, but the coaching is atrocious and Heupal's offense doesn't work against any decent defense.
Al Agnew Posted September 17, 2017 Posted September 17, 2017 Yeah, today was simply horrific. I got to thinking...we kinda got spoiled during the PInkel years. They never got a recruiting class that ranked any better than the mid-30s, but most years they far outperformed their recruiting rankings, which meant that PInkel and company were able to find kids they could develop, and they were good at developing them. Now, there are too many segments of the team that are simply not good enough. The linebackers, the secondary, the offensive line, and the quarterback just aren't good enough. Yep, PInkel fell down on recruiting his last year or two, which is part of the problem, but the main part is that these upperclassmen simply have not improved much, if at all, in the last year or two. Forget for a moment the in-game coaching, which isn't good, either; it just seems that Odom and his assistants can't develop players the way Pinkel could. These guys seem to be able to recruit fairly well, given what the situation has been the last couple of years, but they're never going to be able to get enough guys to have a top team without having to coach them up. If they can't develop like Pinkel, it ain't gonna work. And that's the main reason why I think Odom's days are (and probably should be) numbered. The next year or two probably aren't going to be pretty no matter who is coaching. The question is, can Sterk find a coach that can recruit and develop players? stlfisher 1
stlfisher Posted September 18, 2017 Posted September 18, 2017 I agree. Whoever they get has to either be an ace recruiter or someone that can develop talent. This staff doesn't appear to be able to do either. I think for MU to be successful you have to be able to develop players. Plenty of SEC schools such as A@M and TN have loads of talent, but neither coach can develop. MU is going to have to find a coach from a mid major who is ready to take the next step. Unfortunately, I think there are going to be a lot of good jobs open so the timing is not ideal. I think you need to give Charlie Strong a look. He never fit in Texas and that was doomed from the start, but he could be great for MU.
joeD Posted September 19, 2017 Posted September 19, 2017 What!? Charlie Strong!? He had better players and magnificent facilities and financial support, and still couldn't get it done. Just like Kevin Sumlin at A&M, who will be out of a job soon. How about a coach who has had success? Consistently. Stop with former players and graduates. Just look what happened to the BB team with Kim Anderson. It's happening now with Odom. We're falling behind in a cutthroat conference.

There aren't a lot of those guys looking for jobs.
joeD Posted September 19, 2017 Posted September 19, 2017 True. However, coaches move all the time. ALL the time. It's called MONEY. If we want Mizzou to be a player in the SEC, therefore nationally, they need to open up the athletic wallet, so to speak. Not a guaranty of success by any means, but, hoping a passionate, yet unproven coach will lead the program to success just isn't working. Also, maybe, just maybe, our estimations and evaluations of the talent on the field is over optimistic. Maybe Mizzou just isn't good. Coaches. Players. Just a thought..
snagged in outlet 3 Posted September 19, 2017 Posted September 19, 2017 Not sure Mizzou has enough cash to lure someone of that caliber to deal with the other issues at the campus. grizwilson and Deadstream 2
stlfisher Posted September 19, 2017 Posted September 19, 2017 Charlie Strong did great at Louisville and is doing fine in South Florida. It was always going to be Herman at Texas and Strong was not exactly welcomed. So yeah, I think you need to consider it. Likely, it will be a mid major guy, but that is always high risk/high reward. I heard a rumor about a certain coordinator from the Giants. I seriously doubt it is true and I don't imagine it would be well received.
Ozarks Chillbilly Posted September 21, 2017 Posted September 21, 2017 I'm almost embarrassed to watch Mizzou football anymore. I had higher hopes at the beginning of the season but that has all diminished which is a shame. Now at least we can look forward to their basketball season which, knock on wood, should be looking up. stlfisher 1 Live count (10/19/17) : Streamers lost to Taneycomo's Giant Squid = 12
