I use fresh shad at times to catch whites,Hybrids abd stripers It can be a tremendous help if done right.

I have thought about using chopped shad like we used to use menhaden in the gulf go up current on a point at Stockton and and toss in some diced fresh shad then swim a 1/2 fin s fish on a ned rig prob get slammed by what ever fed on that point

I can't believe I am considering using my fish sauce on lures.  Although it smells about the same as the stuff I do use so maybe it will work.  Dang it MOCARP you may have actually provided something useful.

it does work..... you can make your own with salted shad and an old ice chest..nasty business I used to do it making trapping lure...but tai fish sauce works just as well and a whole lot easier

:) Probably in the trophy zone and the could not figure out how to the real pellets to stay on the hook.

the fake pellets work awesome...they come in floating and sinking  in different sizes and the hollow ones you can make a paste and load it for the picky trout...or carp:rolleyes:

That's what them white things were floating down Taney. I hear if you carry them in the same pocket  spices them up and they work better, but taste tearable.:). Actually, I didn't realize they are good at catching fish.

back in pre power bait days we used mini marshmallows to float salmon eggs off bottom..or velveeta cheese

:) Probably the 1st time I heard of chumming was in reference to a carp fishing tournament. The people that always won supposedly slipped on the night before and chummed there hole with cans of corn. That was probably early 80's in West Texas.

can sweet corn is a great bait for carp, but sunfish, turtles crawfish and waterfowl love it too.... and will pick you clean.....waiting and wondering if your rig has bait on it is what made the need for plastic corn and boilees once out you know they are still there

in closing there is a theory called the baiting pyramid is should apply to trout as well...basically think of a chummed area like an african watering hole.....and the biggest fish move in and run out everything else... in carp the small fish move in and over time the biggest fish get 1st dibs.....below is a better explanation on it application in fishing,...in theory it should apply to trout ...the best feeding station should hold the best trout in a current situation because it brings dinner with the least amount of effort...chumming just moves the dinner table

I see where some states are making chumming illegal. One arguments the state of Michigan used to make it illegal on trout streams was that over chumming will change the fishes feeding habits leading to slow or no bite at all.

I've been in conversation this year with local fly fishermen and several has expressed how slow the bite has been this year. Over chumming? Water conditions? Or fishing habits? I really don't know. But chumming, in general, is an attempt to change feeding habits to one's benefit isn't it? Is that fair to others Angler's that don't?

is it fair for on angler to use spinning gear instead of fly tackle? this a personal choice for each angler....chumming in itself will not replace an anglers skill in reading the water, or presenting an offering...IMHO chumming that feeds and fattens fish is better than feeding them things they get nothing from....If I was trying to catch a brown on a dry fly...what would I chum?....I have pet dart frogs and culture fruit flies (Drosophila hydei) they measure about 1/8 th of an inch long, and are  the ‘wingless’ form. I always thought of culturing some in a 5 gallon bucket and dumping in a a few handfuls in the right water conditions to see what happens....

A well producing deli cup sized culture will put out a shot glass full of the little devils....a 5gal bucket? a full deli cup I am sure...wading out and floating out a few handfuls over a 10-20 minute span I am sure would get them rising....could be interesting

PREBAIT

I enjoyed your article on fishing for carp. It sounds like a lot of fun, and I can't wait to try it. I was surprised to read that you can bait a site beforehand. I had always thought it was illegal to bait fish.

Tina Martin, Holden

Editor's note: Chumming is considered an acceptable fishing method everywhere in Missouri, except in the trout parks, where it is illegal. In my experience, only catfish, carp and trout fishing can be improved by chumming. Baiting animals for hunting is not allowed.

They shouldn't allow people to chum corn for trout.  I can see using fish feed of some type as mentioned above, but corn just isn't good for the fish.

And dang , what self-respecting guide is going to start ladling corn over the side to catch rainbows?

people will do many things for money..ethical or otherwise....from getting a bass from a live box on a dock on TR to win big fish....to taking WAY over their limit to get their "moneys worth"....they can ban corn chumming, yet you can count on it still happening....just like deer shot from the road with a spot light....

I caught my 1st trout on a fly.....have a bucket list of many things angling I hope to try.......once people fish for the fun and not for dinner things will change....we are closer to that today than 15 years ago..but have a ways to go

I thing its a waste to arrow a 30# common and toss it into a dumpster at the ramp.....many are ok with that...I think its not cool to put a knife to a 3# smallie.....is it legal? for now yes....to think a put and take fishery is "natural" we are just fooling ourselves...if a guide is chumming corn I am tossing a corn fly......yellow jig etc....western trout streams are a good way to spend ones retirement.....
