Jdecoudres Posted January 2, 2018 Posted January 2, 2018 Any one using furled leaders? I was looking into them and thought I could get some feedback from some that have experience with it.
snagged in outlet 3 Posted January 2, 2018 Posted January 2, 2018 I used them for a short period. No real advantage as far as I could tell. Water sprays off of them on your first cast whether it's a false cast or delivering the fly.
fishinwrench Posted January 2, 2018 Posted January 2, 2018 True "furled" leaders I don't like because they spin when you add tension. You can't even strip a Clouser fast with them or it will come through the water like a corkscrew. The hand twisted ones cast and roll over just as well and they don't twist, so I make and use those for everything. Love them. Even a sloppy one twisted up in a hurry performs flawlessly.
jdmidwest Posted January 3, 2018 Posted January 3, 2018 I have used Orvis Braided Leaders for years and love them. Bought some of the raw material and make my own for big water rigs. Can't duplicate the taper for smaller rigs. "Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously." — Hunter S. Thompson
bkbying89 Posted January 3, 2018 Posted January 3, 2018 I use furled leaders on my 4, 5, and 6 weight rods. On the 6 I have 2 different length streamer leaders with swivels. One for a floating line the other for a sink tip. I used a floating furled leader on my 4 weight last summer for dries and wouldn't fish anything else. I am using a 4 foot on the five this winter for indicator nymphing. Bill
Members fishin_addict Posted January 3, 2018 Members Posted January 3, 2018 I have a friend who is more of a pure fly fisherman than I and he swears by them. He is strictly a dry fly guy. I haven't made the switch yet myself.

I'm with Wrench on this one even though I rarely use them except in the salt.
