Yeah, it stayed gooey for a long time. I wiggled the hook thinking it would expose it to air, when that didn’t work I did it a couple more times. Then I gave it another big up and down in the slot and let it set for a while. Nothing. I did the oven thing without researching or anyhing — I was prepared for a total loss on the little poppers at that point. They set up hard as a rock, but needed a little clean up. John
Flysmallie Posted April 18, 2018 Posted April 18, 2018 If it was gooey then the foam had a chemical reaction with the glue an probably would have never set up without the heat. That was a good call on your part. The glue and that particular foam were not compatible.

But they were both Waspi Perfect Poppers, and the pencil ones were fine. Weird. John
fishinwrench Posted April 18, 2018 Posted April 18, 2018 Did you put a thread base over the hook shank, or did you try to glue a bare hook to the popper body like some crackhead Etheopian in a sweat shop? Geeze, you're supposed to be producing a proven, time tested, bona-fide killer. Not some friggin' attic experiment.

I thread wrap my elcheapo balsa popper hooks. I thought humidity/dampness helped set CA glues? Some super glues just take forever to dry. When I use some on specific steps on flies I will sometimes put a puddle of it on plastic. Just use it as I need it. Fred Hanne the guy who does realistic bugs told me to try it. BilletHead. fishinwrench Posted April 18, 2018 Posted April 18, 2018 I use 3M Super 77 on these And you'll break the hook before they come undone. I use long cure Devcon epoxy on everything else. The quick cure stuff turns yellow and gets brittle.

Did the pencil poppers first and the regular right after that same bottle of Zap-a-Gap. No time for temperature or humidity change. Can’t think of any other variable that would ha e affected it but the poppers themselves. But that seems pretty unlikely too. Weird. John
